What's an offseason without Backlund signing another baby contract under the hopes that he "breaks out" soon?

I'd say he already did. He put up half a point per game in a defensive role on the team while being 14th in PP TOI/game. From the perspective of winning games, I do not exaggerate when I say he's the most important forward currently on the team. Baertschi is more important in terms of scoring and will likely surpass Backlund in terms of on-ice importance soon, but currently it's Backlund.

I wish this had been a 6-7 year contract at up to double the cap hit.

The guy did awesome in Sweden during the lockout and then looked great this season until he got hurt (again). It's pretty clear that he embraces the city and organization and I'd say the Flames got him cheaper than he's probably worth, he just hasn't really shown it yet. If he can stay healthy, my bet is he will get a handsome raise after these two years are up. I'm pretty happy with this signing.

He will still have one year of RFA status left when this contract is done. He can be re-signed then. This contract is perfect for the Flames.

That was such a garbage injury too, hopefully he doesnt take too many knee on knee's in his career. Really Really love this contract. I loved watching him and Baertschi explode at the end of the season.

Great signing, wish it was longer though. Hopefully he can stay healthy this year.

Surprised he didn't go to arbitration. My sources down at the corner store said he wouldn't settle for anything less than 2.5M/yr.

He is actually a pretty good second line center. His points might not show it, but he's great. It would obviously help if we had a real NHL team to ice.

I think thats good value for the money. He still has potential to develop into a good scoring line player, and if not he is still a good third liner.

I would not question his value to the team, but I would question his ability to stay healthy. I think a two-year deal is the right idea. If Backlund can stay healthy and be consistent he can cash in big after that. If not, then there's little risk to the Flames.

I love Backlund as a player - I'd just like to see a healthy, consistent, 82-game season before I throw a big contract at him.

This is a good deal, would've been better if they could've got him for more term though, imo.

Thank you Flames. The Flyers need to show B.Schenn and Couts this deal when re-signing them. Of course, Holmgen will offer $3.75 per year over 4 years or something.

Schenn and Couts are both much better than Backlund, i would think close to 3.5M for each would be fair.

I think his agent needs to go back to negotiating school but good deal for us.

The big issue for Backlund has been staying healthy. I don't think that's been an issue for Schenn and Couturier. If Backlund didn't have the injury history I'm sure he would have received more.
