What in the world...that makes no sense whatsoever. Why wouldn't the new Northeast division be the Metropolitan division? Instead, none of the former Atlantic division teams are in the new Atlantic. Not to mention the Metropolitan division is much more "Atlantic" than the Atlantic division...

Adds up to 41, so there's an error somewhere, but is close. Not too bad a schedule IMO. Heavy Friday.
There are 82 games.

Atlantic makes sense because they couldn't use any variation of northeast due to the Florida teams. I kind of like the Metropolitan Division name, particularly because I like Raleigh being lumped into that branding with the big cities haha.

I don't like the name either. I guess it'll sound better when everyone is calling it metro division, but still seems a little weird.

First game of the season the red wings will be in raleigh though. hope it's not another 5-1 with the sole goal from pat dwyer

Interesting quirk: the only time the Bruins visit Raleigh this year is the same night that the Patriots are in Charlotte.

Well I'm excited as hell about this schedule assuming I will still be living up here. So many Saturday opportunities.

Sat, Oct 19 at Islanders
Sat, Nov 2 at Rangers
Sat, Nov 23 at Bruins
Wed, Nov 27 at Devils
Sat, Jan 4 at Islanders
Tue, Jan 21 at Flyers
Sat, Mar 8 at Devils
Sat, Mar 15 at Bruins
Tue, Apr 8 at Rangers
Sun, Apr 13 at Flyers

We only have 4 Saturday home games the entire season, however. Bad news there.

That blows a significant amount. Our opportunities to start drinking in the fair lot before noon are limited.

Good stuff. I like the balance in days... apparently they hate Wednesdays, but whatever.

As for the division names, if you forget the previous incarnation of the Atlantic division and the fact that most of them aren't on the ocean, the name makes a little bit of sense now that they have a couple of Florida teams. Metro is just weird - sounds like a working name that was supposed to be changed before it went public. Mid-Atlantic would have made sense, but that would get confusing with the other one being the Atlantic so I guess I'm not sure what I would have called it either. The ones out west make sense.

Personally, I would have gone back to named divisions since the eastern teams basically look like a bunch of red and blue darts that were thrown at a map. When you take the Eastern name for the conference, it limits your options for division names. They could have also gone back to Campbell and Wales conferences and done geographic division names. The trophies still carry those names anyway.

They aren't playing around to start the season. 9 games in 15 days.

I always thought it would have been funny for Winnipeg to win the Southeast one year so they would have a Southeastern Division champions banner hanging at the arena. I now want us to win the division so that we can have a Metropolitan Division champions banner in Raleigh.

Is there even a schedule matrix? From what it looks like, it's 4/5 games vs. the division, home and away vs. everyone else in the league then fill in the blanks from there. Sort of how they used to do it.

Within Conference (Non-Division): 24 games

* 3 games vs. each team (2 Home/1 Away vs. four teams, 1 Home/2 Away vs. four teams). Teams rotated on a yearly basis.

Eastern Conference (8-Team Divisions)

Within Conference (Division): 30 games

* 5 games vs. two teams (3 Home/2 Away vs. one team, 2 Home/3 Away vs. one team) AND 4 games vs. five teams (2 Home/2 Away). Teams rotated on a yearly basis.

* 5 X 2 =10 games

* 4 X 5 = 20 games

Within Conference (Non-Division): 24 games

* 3 games vs. each team (2 Home/1 Away vs. four teams, 1 Home/2 Away vs. four teams). Teams rotated on a yearly basis.

* 3 X 8 = 24 games

Non-Conference: 28 games

* 2 games vs. each team (1 Home/1 Away)

* 2 X 14 = 28 games

The Stanley Cup Playoffs have a new division-based format. Playoff qualification will be primarily Division-based, with the top three finishers in each Division qualifying for the first 12 spots in the Stanley Cup Playoffs (and the first three "seeds" in each Division). The two additional playoff spots in each Conference, designated as "Wild Cards," will be awarded to the next two highest-placed finishers in each Conference, ranked on the basis of regular-season points and regardless of Division. The League will play under this new alignment and playoff system for a minimum of three seasons, through the 2015-16 NHL season.

Gotcha, thanks. Looks like the extra division games are against the Blue Jackets (3 at PNC) and Capitals while the extra conference home games are against the Panthers, Lightning, Senators and Canadiens.

5 out of the 7 weekends in March/April will have Sat or Sun games. Plenty of warm weather tailgate opportunities will be a nice way to round out the regular season.
