I can definitely cross one name off that list...

It makes me wonder who, if not Jagr, would benefit the most from a one-year contract.

My new conspiracy theory: Betting Jagr approached JR (as he said) who was trying to make room and wanted to keep it under wraps while still trying to prove to the media and fans that he's doing something big, but then it got out of hand. So he's trying to keep things under control by saying they've never talked to Jagr, which clearly appears to be false. He doesn't want a team like Montreal or LA to come in and make Jagr an offer he can't refuse.

I'd almost be willing to be it's Jagr or bust. Saying they've never talked to Jagr is a flat out lie. No way Svoboda name drops Carolina just because.

C'mon Tarheel. I never said anything about packaged pork. Slow cooking the pork is required for any style of BBQ (at least good BBQ), so that's not unique to eastern NC. What makes it eastern NC BBQ, is the sauce/spices that is put on it...which is why I come back to what's so special about putting vinegar and crushed red pepper on pork? I guess it's like anything else...pride in the local food. People from Buffalo rave about the wings. People from Chicago rave about the deep dish. People from NY swear by the thin crust, etc... I just don't see it as anything special.

EDIT: now that I've pushed this thread way off track, back to the speculation about Jagr.

I'm not a fan of eastern myself. It's passable but I'm not going to seek it out.

Oh and Jagr. Don't know how I feel about him. Was into the idea before JR got into moving someone to sign this mystery man. I'd be more into the idea if we were moving out a defenseman to sign a defenseman I think.

What the f? If you say you don't like Eastern BBQ either, your safety cannot be guaranteed.
SST! a product often found in hornady's superformance line. "it is rocket science". (one other on here may know what it is based on something they said once). far better than "tea line indeed"!!!

I'm personally not a fan of Chicago deep dish, having eaten it once in my life. So I'm clearly an expert in that regard...

I guess anything is open to interpretation, but with Rutherford saying "one of the bigger free agents", I really can't see how that can be more than 3-4 players at most. If it really isn't Jagr, then that only leaves a couple of guys. Of course a few years ago, he got our hopes up about signing a veteran defensemen and then proceeded to land Melichar so you never know.

My guess is nothing will happen in the end.

The facts, as we know them:

-The mystery player approached JR
-The salary was between 3M and 3.5M.
-He was looking for a year contract
-As of Monday (or was it Tuesday?) the player was still available and waiting for JR to clear salary.
-Jagr has Carolina on his "list"

Morrow isn't commanding that much. Grabovski wouldn't insist on 1 year. Hainsey/Raymond/Brunner aren't big name free agents. Am I missing anyone relevant?

There's a good chance nothing happens, but how is this not Jagr?

Brunner.

But a 1 year deal wouldn't make sense for him either.

Too wordy, perhaps.
The Whaler/Canes best line ever with the best nickname ever was Stash, Dash and Bash from 1979-81. Blaine Stoughton was the right wing. His nickname was for both his goal scoring (tied for the NHL lead with 56 in 1979-80) but also for his fantastic pornstasche. Mike Rogers was the speedy, playmaking center (Dash) and Pat Boutette was the physical left wing (Bash).

And I'm sorry, but Bash, Dash and Stash just doesn't work as well.

I highly doubt it's an RFA. Targeting an RFA to a cheap contract means that the team possessing the rights to the player can easily match our contract. The idea gets more horrendous when you remember that JR said he was moving out a player to make it happen. It's an incredible risk to move out a player in hopes that a cheap contract isn't matched by the original team. The only way this is even a remote possibility is that the team with this RFA is sitting above the cap right now.

So no, it's gotta be a UFA.

I don't know how many RFA's would have the stones to come to a team and additionally, at that price point that would be some draft picks.

I can't shake the feeling that it's Grabovski if not Jagr. Seeing the way Semin was embraced here may have had something to do with that. Opportunity to play significant minutes immediately may be another.

I think it's Hainsey if not Jagr. JR probably trying to trade Pitkanen to free up space for him, hence the long delay of any takers for Pitkanen

Svoboda flat-out said it was Jagr. The rest is posturing, no? And Maniscalco is such a club mouthpiece that it's hard to even listen to the guy.

Canes Country

Jaromir Jagr is not the "mystery man" free agent after all.

Peter Svoboda, Jaromir Jagr's agent, confirmed in an exclusive interview with Canes Country Wednesday afternoon that the winger was, in fact, interested in joining the team.

According to team sources, the Hurricanes are currently not in discussions with 41-year-old winger; he was not the free agent general manager Jim Rutherford referred to Tuesday in a radio interview on 99.9 The Fan.

"One of the bigger free agent's agents contacted me and said 'my client may take a one-year deal, at a low number, just to come play for you guys,'" Rutherford said when speaking to the media following last months draft.

The question still remains, who are the 'Canes targeting?

I still say Hainsey makes the most sense.

went out of his way to sign in Atlanta before they moved
was coached by Kirk in Montreal
has played with Komisarek in the past

there are enough things there to make me think he's a realistic option, not to mention JR saying he has to move someone out to make it work, which leads me to believe it's a dman considering we can just sign Jagr to a bonus heavy contract.

And he gets to join NHLPA buddy Westgarth again

I just can't see it being Jagr, simply because Jagr's a mercenary. At this point in his career, he's playing for two things: money and another Cup.

Him taking a discount to anywhere but a Cup contender (which we aren't) doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense.

i have a feeling it's grabovski as well for those same reasons. he would enjoy a year, perhaps more of anonymity after his experiences in toronto.

Still think this situation screams "Jagr" but I could also see it being somebody like Gagne or Penner. If I were a free agent winger looking to resurrect my career I'd probably see Carolina as a good place to be considering the potential linemates.
