Quebec City to host preseason game (MTL/CAR)

I don't think we've had a thread on this yet, my apologies if I'm wrong.

The Hurricanes just released their preseason schedule:

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news....id=DL|CAR|home

Friday, September 20th - Canadiens @ Hurricanes at Pepsi Colisee (Quebec City)

Yes, you read that right. @ Hurricanes

The teams play the next night at Bell Centre in Montreal, which is officially listed as @ Canadiens.

I wont be going, they are charging an arm and a leg to see the B (or sometimes C and D ) teams practice, especially since it's hard to root for either the Habs or the Sunbelt Whalers.

Now, I'm not saying it wont be fun for the Habs fans who go to the game, just that in my opinion a game where nobody plays to win isn't as fun as going to see the Remparts (or going to Ottawa to see the Sens).

Let hear the bard song!

Yeah this game is gonna be awkward!!!

Nordiques fans spent part of the summer hoping for a return and now the habs are playing another crap pre-season game in their old barn! If they have expansion plan it would not be a bad day to announce them.

That's the kind of game I wish the Nordique Nation should boycott and spread the word thru out the city for anyone who wish they would attend it.

As far as it goes being @Hurricanes, I wouldn't expect it otherwise, you don't allow your lifelong enemy to come and make home on your own turf.

But, but, but you all have to go to show The Bettman that you love NHL hockey and want it back!

I'm not a fan of this idea either. If we have to play a neutral site preseason game, I'd much rather the Canes do it someplace where we can grow the brand and the fanbase than in some place like Quebec City. I would have preferred to see Charlotte, Greensboro, Greenville, Columbia, or Charleston get this LONG before QC. At least that way we're broadening the fanbase in other parts of North or South Carolina.

This is most likely considered a Montreal home exhibition game. So they had the right to choose QC much like Carolina would have had the right to choose one of the cities you mentioned.

Nope. Read the thread. We're the home team and we're giving up a home preseason game at PNC for it.

What this tells me is that the Canes are desperate for money and they figure that a game in Quebec will give them more money than a game anywhere close to their home.

Unlikely. Especially considering that Karmanos has a new influx of local minority owners including the owner of Epic Games.

Makes sense. I boycotted universities until I was given a dimploma.

The Coyotes played pre-season games in Winnipeg for that exact reason. They made more money off the gate in Winnipeg than the Coyotes have ever made off the gate in Glendale.

The NHL held IIRC 7 pre-season games over the years in Winnipeg before the Thrashers were sold to TNSE. The talk around town for these games... people were all " we have to sell out these games to show the NHL we really want a team ". Suckers. It was a money grab on peoples' emotions, and you have to be pretty dumb to not see it. TNSE and the NHL made it clear that these pre-season games had no bearing on Winnipeg getting back into the NHL or not, because it is one game. Any city can sell out one NHL game. It's the commitment to sell out 41 games that's the issue.

Me and a lot of people I know never went to those games because the NHL was not going to get a dime from us until it was to actually support our own NHL team.

We've been having Habs pre-seasons game most of the year, even the avs where here in 2002, Sakic, Forsberg and Foote where wearing a Nordiques Jerseys for the pre-game practice and received an ovation...

THAT game I was interested in because it was the ex-Nords with still three players on the team. Seeing our rivals against a team I don't give a **** about, I find it close to insulting.

Was like the citadelle, the farm team of the Habs, what a slap in the face.... No wonder why this did not work....

You're not entitled to see whatever game you personally choose. Sheesh.

The 'Canes may or may not make more money with a game in Quebec City as opposed to one of those places, but they're in Buffalo on the 19th, then QC on the 20th, then Montreal on the 21st. It would have cost more/taken longer to go back to NC/SC on the 20th between the 2 games in the NE.

And it would have made no sense to put the team through that kind of travel in the preseason.

Personally, I'm not so crazy about preseason hockey that I want the team flying all over creation just to squeeze in a third home date.
