Flames Sign Mikael Backlund to a 2-year, $1.5M AAV deal.

“Mikael really stepped-up last season and took advantage of the change in direction under a new coaching staff,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “He came into camp in very good shape and also had regained his confidence. He parlayed that into a strong season, and if it wasn’t for his injury we believe he would have progressed even further in his development. We need Mikael to be one of our go-to players this year, and we are excited about watching him continue to evolve and take that step to the next level as a player.”

Didn't a poster say that he was going to arbitration?

Looks like there was no arbitration involved. Great deal for the Flames, I really hope they award him with an even better contract in a year and a half's time.

Yup, good numbers all around. I'm glad it's not a 1-year so we don't have to go through this again next off-season, and $1.5M seems very fair, if not lower than what I expected. Now please tell me this is the year he stays healthy!

Just awesome.

Good to hear management say positive things about him. Maybe he gets a letter one day.

Excellent numbers. Hoping he's around the 40-50+ points this year.

If he stays healthy, with the amount of minutes he'll be getting as no worse than the number 2 centre, I could see him getting 50-55.

Good job, Feaster. Nicely done on the term and money.

I would have gone higher for more years. If he can stay healthy I think he will break out.

Now it's Brodie's turn! I like this contract though.

50 points getting big minutes isn't a stretch for anybody. For Backlund, its only a question of staying healthy.

He proved me wrong and showed a consistent NHL game. I still question his health and longevity (shoulder issue + knee issue), but hopefully he can overcome that. Great deal for the Flames. I would have gone as high as 2-2.25 million + an extra year.

T.J. Brodie, you're next!

I'll eat crow on Backlund. Before last season, I thought he was done. I thought he was given all the chances in the world and failed to produce at the NHL level.

This year I've never felt so good about being wrong.

3 years would have taken him straight to UFA. 4 years of more would have meant buying up UFA years, which increases the price significantly.

2 years is pretty much perfect at this point. If Backlund can stay relatively healthy and even maintain a 0.5 points per game pace, this contract quickly becomes a steal.

Love that not a single person is complaining about this contract Backlund is a great player and this is a great deal.

I think though that 50 points or more is a stretch for him next season unless he's playing all 82 games. I'd project him at 65 gp, 41 points.

I won't use the word "guaranteed" but he's definitely penciled in as a top 6 center next season. If he plays a full season there's no reason to believe he won't hit at least 50 points.

This is the area I rank as Feaster's greatest strength, contract signing. In this department he is infinitely better than Sutter. Great job to everyone, and hopefully Backlund can take that next step.

He's at least getting better. The second Jokinen contract was pretty cringy.

EDITED: Oh wait that was Sutter, I just proved your point XD Hahaha.
