He took at 1-year $2.5m contract last year to prove himself and he played like a star. No choice but to pay him.

Bigger cap hit than Chara, and on an 8 year contract? That's insane.

Has there ever been a long goalie contract that has ended up being a good idea?

Long term goalie contracts are always terrifying, but you have to pay your elite players.

The best part is he doesn't care. He just goes out and plays. His demenor is the best.

Well you also gotta consider that Rask is a full 5 years younger then Lundqvist.

Huh? Luongo signed a 12 year contract with a $5.3M cap hit. I don't see the resemblance ????

I'm as high on Rask as anyone - you'll have a tough time convincing me he isn't a top-3 goalie... But that is serious $$ and term. Bruins might regret it.

You will if/when Rask starts to struggle in a few years, as goalies are apt to do, and Boston can't jettison him out the nearest airlock.

The high cap hits on goalies is okay, it's the term that kills these deals. I don't think any goalie should get more than 5 years, personally. There's just too many good goalies to find the need to sign one that long, even an elite one like Rask.

His play this past season/playoffs warrants this contract. Good goalie. However, in the coming years as Chara, Seidenberg, and Boychuck get older or depart, and the Bruins defense begins to become less potent, we will see if he can continue this level of play. As can be said with almost every goalie in the league, as teams inevitably reach highs and lows.

Wouldn't pay any goalie that much for that long, even one as good as Rask was in the playoffs. Just too risky he'll become a headcase at some point.

As a GM I'd be very hesitant to give out any long term contracts for goalies until I see how new equipment regulations affect their game.

Rask might be slightly different as his game is based a lot on movement already, but still...

*IF* Quick can keep up his play, then the deal he signed will turn out to be an absolute steal for the Kings.

Big IF though.

And I think this is market for Rask. No discount, no overpayment. It's in line with Rinne, Price, Ward
