Price vs. Rask (Consider Contracts)

Which goalie do you take on your team, Price or Rask?

Price will have a cap hit of $6.5 million for the next 5 years (he has already played one year of his 6 year deal).

Rask will have a cap hit of $7 million for the next 8 years.

You do realize the overwhelming favorite will be Rask anyway, due to Price's subpar end to his season and Rask having a phenomenal year + playoffs.

The contracts might even that out though.

Price has never had a season like Rask's

And Rask's season isn't too far away from the norm for him.

Still dissapointed in the contract.

Rask.

Until Price proves he can handle playoff pressure. As of right now the only goalies more unreliable than him in the playoffs are probably Fleury and Bryzgalov.

Price also never had a defence like Rask had either. I hope both do well over the course of their contracts, I like both players

I'm still not sold on Boston's goalies being as good as they appear on paper.

But Rask will have plenty of time to prove me wrong next season.

I'd argue that his 72 games season was better than what Rask did this year.

By a good margin too.

The Bruins don't have an amazing defense. You have the current Norris winner, too.

How?

Rask played 55 this year and put up better numbers

I would say Boston is good defensively. Chara is a monster (Can we please have him )

2012-13 - Boston - 2.21 GA/G (3rd in NHL)

Tuukka Rask - .929 Sv% (36 games)
Anton Khudobin - .920 Sv% (14 games)

2011-12 - Boston - 2.43 GA/G (6th in NHL)

Tim Thomas - .920 Sv% (59 games)
Tuukka Rask - .929 Sv% (23 games)

2010-11 - Boston - 2.30 GA/G (2nd in NHL)

Tim Thomas - .938 Sv% (57 games)
Tuukka Rask - .918 Sv% (29 games)

2009-10 - Boston - 2.33 GA/G (2nd in NHL)

Tuukka Rask - .931 Sv% (45 games)
Tim Thomas - .915 Sv% (43 games)

2008-09 - Boston - 2.32 GA/G (1st in NHL)

Tim Thomas - .933 Sv% (54 games)
Manny Fernandez - .910 Sv% (28 games)

2007-08 - Boston - 2.62 GA/G (11th in NHL)

Tim Thomas - .921 Sv% (57 games)
Alex Auld - .919 Sv% (23 games)

I had to go back to 2007-08 to find a year they finished outside of the top 10. Pretty crazy to think about (wish we had this problem, seems like a good one to have )

If you count playoffs (since you are for Rask evidently) Price played 79 games that season and had a .925 SV%. Not as good as Rask in that department but the more than 20 additional games could have more value. There's certainly a debate as to which season was more valuable but there's not much debate overall, yes Price has played a lot more games and that has value but he's coming off a pretty bad season and Rask has never had a dip like that. You have to go with Rask right now.

I do suspect playing for Boston of late in someway inflates a goalie's stats but it doesn't pump Rask from .910 to .930, he's still elite.

I still think Price is the (slightly) better goalie.

How is Price getting votes? The guy has comparable playoff stats to Fleury.

Edit: Voted for him by accident. I guess that's how.

It has become largely apparent that people don't really care how good goaltenders are at actually stopping pucks when they're deciding who is the better goaltender.

I voted Rask... but at these prices I wouldn't want either of them.

I'm satisfied keeping Price. Obviously Rask vastly outperformed him this past season. But I'm optimistic that the new goalie coach will help get Price back on at least a level footing. The way he was playing towards the end of last year was just so uncharacteristic and ineffective that I can't really take it too seriously yet, and believe instead that he'll readjust easily enough.
