Wait so Spezza outscored Sedin once in the span of 5 years by a measly 2 points yet he's deemed "The much better player"

Then there are a few young guys that I think will also probably be better this year but I wouldn't take them over Sedin as of right now.
I'd add Duchene to the list as well.

To be honest, Spezza isn't helping anyone when he's in the press box.

He has incredible talent, but after awhile, the lack of complete seasons is a significant downside.

We can get into all kinds of debates about "better" including or excluding the health component, but in the real world, the fact remains that one guy is producing in similar fashion and doesn't miss nearly as many games.

At this point in his career, his chronic back issues are a ticking time bomb that could go off at any time.

I think Spezza has come a long way in terms of his complete game, but I'm not convinced he's put his injury issues behind him after missing most of last season.

Accidentally voted non-Canucks fan saying Sedin. Should be Canucks fan saying Sedin.

Please don't kid yourself, these (bolded) are all toss ups. You can't tell any of these players are significantly better than Henrik.

Henrik Sedin

2012-2013 - 10th
2011-2012 - 5th
2010-2011 - 1st
2009-2010 - 1st
2008-2009 - 10th

That is where Henrik finished the last 5 years in points for centers.

Are there really 16 centers in the league who are better than him?

It depends on what you mean by better. If I'm picking who will get more points then I take Sedin over almost all of my list potentially. Maybe it's just my hatred for Vancouver speaking but I find both Sedin's over rated, with Henrik being slightly more over rated.

If I am trying to win the cup next year, then yes, there are around 15 centres that I would rather have on my roster.

I never said any of them aren't close. I understand your argument. It works this way with any position though. Rick Nash is a more skilled player than Patrick Sharp. No way I take Nash over Sharp next year if I am trying to win the Stanley Cup. Many would argue that Letang is more skilled/has shown more than Keith the last three years, I would NEVER choose Letang over Keith.

I think after Sid and Geno, there are many centres that are clumped together, and Sedin just happens to be the one that I value less than others.

Non Canucks fan saying Henrik. He has been incredibly consistent the last 8 years, and hasn't missed a game in that span.

Thats fair enough, I just feel like a guy whos averaged 1.13 points/game the last 5 years, and .98 ppg the last 5 years in the playoffs (as well as the 10th, 5th, 1st, 1st, 10th point finishes) puts him in that top echelon of centers. Not a middle of the pack 1st line center.

Definitely, but you have to remember that wingers are also generally less valuable. Sedin is probably still in the top 25-30 forwards in the league which technically makes him a #1 forward on a team. I can see Sedin anywhere between 4-15 in centres though depending on personal opinion.

If you bump this thread in a year I guarantee I'll look like an idiot for those 15 forwards because Sedin will probably do better than a lot of them. I just feel that as of right now I'd have more faith in the other to bring a team all the way.

There are definitely a few that I'm not convinced about (Thornton, Getzlaf, etc.). Just a hunch I guess really.

I wonder what Spezza's numbers would be if he had a twin playing right next to him, wow that would be awesome.

Its tough to rank star players... most of them are separated by the thinnest of margins. Everyones rankings change from year to year, and one bad season can make a star seem like a bum (look at Ovechkin for 90% of this year)

I'm sorry I read my post over and I don't see where you got the idea that I believe ANY of these players to be significantly better than Sedin. Yes, many are toss ups. Hell, if I was guaranteed Kesler's healthy all season next year, I think he COULD be just as valuable as Sedin. Less assists, more goals, better defense, way better on the faceoff dot.

Example: In the last 3 playoffs for the Canucks, Sedin has not once had a better faceoff percentage than Kesler, not once played more minutes than Kesler, and has 6 more points with 4 less goals and a worse plus minus. Kesler has also averaged 2:52 or more minutes of short handed time on ice, with Henrik not having more than 20 seconds. And of course, Kesler doesn't play with his own brother.

Sedin is an extremely talented player, but I don't think that it's ridiculous for me to say I would trust the others more if I wanted to go far.

And if the team he played for flopped to the ice to draw a powerplay any time they get touched.

To be fair, the Sens do dive. Every single team in the league dives.

What a pathetic post. The Canucks had a mere 8 more power-plays than the Sense this year. Obvious you haven't watched the Canucks play since the 2011 playoffs so anything you say should be deemed as useless.

Bringing up defensive play as the tiebreaker between Sedin and Spezza made me chuckle.

Neither are great in that respect. They're not counted on at all to provide a defensive game.

Yeah the Sedins best attribute towards a defensive game is keeping the play hemmed in the other zone. Even without AV's increasing obsession for zone starts they gotta be among the best in the NHL at this.

Chose Sedin, they are ridiculously close in terms of talent. One is more of a goal scorer, the other is a playmaker.

I'd love to have either on my team.
