Its a pet peeve of mine as well.

Its not racism, its called xenophobia. Still, its not wrong to say its a risk signing Russian players because its true. KHL is a big thing over there.

Teams will have to feel very strongly about a particular Russian player to overcome these issues.

The Bruins still haven't seen Chudinov. I know he is a low pick, but why not draft and develop someone more likely to remain in the NHL.

What will happen to Khokhlachev? Will he be around for the long haul?

Should change the title to Kovalchuk defects.

Wonder what kind of (if any) precedent?

Funny, but I don't have a problem with what Kovalchuk did. It's his life. He only gets one of them. We all have our own value system.

Though maybe he could have done it before FA started.

Rarely do I have any urge to listen to Don Cherry after 30+ years of it but I`d bet his rant against Kovalchuk would be priceless

Don't the NHL and KHL have an agreement in place that they're not supposed to negotiate with the other league's players while they're under contract?

Annnnnnnddddddddd yep...

It's not racism, xenophobia, or anything else but smart business sense to steer clear of Russian players and prospects when something like this happens...I'm sorry, it just is.

Unreal. Don't blame him though. More money than he would make here (x2) and he gets to play in front of his family and friends. Truly one of my all time favorites to watch

He's not under contract anymore now that's he "retired" from the NHL.

Now obviously if they're announcing a contract with SKA "soon" then it was clearly negotiated beforehand. But if the Devils wanted they could try an block it but they let him go. Truth be told, given the fact that the Devils are essentially broke, this is a good thing for their owner.

I understand that he's "retired", but being retired mean you're not playing hockey anymore. There was clearly negotiations happening beforehand.

I'm not saying the Devils would want or try to block his move. I'm simply asking the question as it could pertain to future negotiations between the two leagues.

LMAO! Good stuff. I can't blame him for leaving NJ. He'll be a star of stars over there and be making a better salary, not to mention the tax rate in Russia will be much better for him. Always good to have a little surprise here and there in the offseason.

Greedy, soulless b@st@rds!

Unlike North American players who play ham sandwiches and a warm smile.
the players themselves tell us that hockey is a business and they take these huge contracts which are supposedly legally binding so if we expect them to honor these contracts because it's a business then they have no one to blame but themselves. personally speaking if I started to notice that the blonde players were deciding the contract more than the red headed players. or if I noticed that the tall players were doing it more than the short players then I would probably start to get upset at those people too. It is the players themselves that tried to tell us its a business every time they sit down to the cba or try to leverage a new contract out of the owners. if they want to keep trying to force these six seven eight and twelve year contract out of the owners that it's up to them to honor the contract once signed

Sucks for NJ....Also sucks for the NHL...League just lost one of the best and most excited players in the league....Loved watching him play....

Shame hes leaving to play in the KHL...but what can you do...

It definitely doesn't help the reputation with Russians in the NHL...GM's will continue to be more worried about drafting and giving them big contracts in fear they'll up and leave for the KHL, especially with the KHL growing and becoming more popular year by year...

I thought we had it bad having our first line next season be the pizza guy, Bergeron and the bus driver but ouch! Ouch! That's... That's gotta hurt. Glad I'm not a Devils fan.

Also that it's home, and I always got the impression that Kovalchuk is one of those people who will always feel the pull of home. Some people adjust to a different culture more easily than others.

As for a contract with the KHL, he was there during the lockout and there certainly didn't have to be anything formal for him to know that there would be a spot for him.

Oh, I'd be pissed. And I fully expect and understand and encourage Devils fans to be pissed.

I just mean that it's his life. He isn't a slave, and contract or not, he doesn't have to continue playing for a team he doesn't want to, nor does he have to play somewhere he doesn't want to.
