I would never play in that league for any salary figure. Player safety becomes a bigger issue.

but what if you're a hometown star player like Kovalchuk is? for some, money is #1 priority, which isn't wrong IMO. But backing off of a contract agreement was just ridiculous on Kovalchuk's part. Lost a lot of respect for him.

That's the kind of player that belongs in the KHL. Too good for the AHL, not good enough for the NHL. Nigel Dawes. Matt Gilroy, ect.

The Devil went back to Russia, he was looking for a deal to kill. He didn't mind putting Lou in a bind, and crushing New Jersey fans at will

makes sense. maybe Kovalchuk is trying to change the dynamics of the KHL perhaps, he's probably close with the owners. make a european league to compete with the NHL in a few years? Maybe try to attract more Russians in future years.

Mckenzie is right. Short term this isn't good for the Devils but long term it gets them out of a bad contract.

Is there going to be a military response from the Devils Army?

I shouldn't laugh. Who knows?--some day some **** like this might happen to us. I'll tell you what the Devil's forum here with a very few exceptions (thinking of Tundra as one of them) has an absolutely pathological hatred for everything and anything Rangers. Avery and the '94 season really left marks on their souls that will never come clean. Kovalchuk has always struck me as a bit of a dick by the way and this is an uppercut right to the nuts to an organization that went to lots and lots of trouble to get him out of a place that he didn't want to be in and went to lengths to give him anything he desired including tons upon tons of $. That ****er should be ashamed of himself but he's going to **** off back home to play in the KHL?--if I'm getting this right? Jesus.

So they can sign more Ryane Clowe-type deals?

haven't read all posts yet (I'm getting there....)

But can he announce his Retirement and "leave" NHL, sign for a khl team and one day be back in the nhl ?

or is he blacklisted by the League if he does this ?(retire, sign elsewhere and come back)

Seriously, people are thinking that the Devils can just find another player like Kovalchuk with the free cap space they have. It will be difficult even to find a player as dynamic as him in the top half of the draft.

Sorry if it has been mentioned, i can't read through 10 pages to find the answer right now.

What is the real cap penalty?

SiriusXM said 300k per year, then said 3m per year. In other words, they don't know.

I thought if a player retired the signing team would be on the hook for the full cap hit for the remaining length of the contract.

So in the last five first rounds of the draft (including next year), the Devils have come away with Larsson and Matteau, who they burned a year of his contract already (obviously Schneider via trade too).

They've gone through 2 coaches to find the right fit for a player that didn't want to be there.

Made Kovalchuk the priority over signing Parise. Lost Clarkson for who knows what reason.

Gave Zajac (who is a nice player) that ridiculous contract. Elias' 3yr 5.5m 35+ contract at age 37. Zubrus 35+ contract.

Last few signings: Clowe (looks to be a terrible deal), Volchenkov (is a terrible deal), Tallinder & Rolston (was awful but they got rid of it in his last year).

Anyone want to tell me how great of a GM Lou is again?

If people trash Sather's legacy for stumbling upon Gretzky, where's the blowback on Lou for stumbling upon a 20-year (which is insane if you look at goalie peaks historically) HOF goalie?

While Kovy is the ultimate dick in this situation, the Devils' management team really is not as good as their fans and most people want to believe.

Their team has had some of the luckiest breaks in the past few years, and now they've finally got caught with their pants down.

Per Bill Daly, its 300K

He potentially could have had one if he didn't trade for Schneider.

Weren't the NYR on the hook for the remainder of Drury's contract?

Silver lining for the devils: At least they'll give up less SH goals now.
