Well considering the worst team only has a 25% chance of coming away with the 1st overall pick, I'm not too worried about it. And odds are they won't be one of the worst couple teams two years from now, even without Kovy.

If I was Lou I would've dropped the mic at the press conference and said "You know what? I'm retiring too. **** this ****."

I feared his one-timer on their powerplay and his ability to take the puck up the ice. Fear no more!!

Maybe early in his career, but I thought he was a changed person after MacLean was fired. He played the 2012 playoffs with broken back and was probably the best forward in the playoffs, he was playing his ass off and did everything in his power to help the team win. Remember how badly he torched up the Rangers in the biggest playoff series in years?

This is just shocking.

Even if he makes more money there, living in st. petersburg is not the same as living near nyc.

This has made this offseason even better imo. We picked up some very nice pieces, got our RFAS resigned to great deals, aside from Step yet, and the Devils get ****ed royally.

Isn't there some sort of transfer rule with the K? Or is this just some intricate loophole in it? How can you be allowed to "retire," but not actually retire, while still under contact?

Of course they will. They can't afford to give away the free cloth.

Might actually suit him better. St Petersburg is a stunning city.

Chico Resch on TSN 690 in Montreal, just said that he thinks it may have been a sudden decision, because he was building a home in NJ and was happy there. He also said his 2 best friends on the team were Clarkson and Brodeur...one just left and the other is leaving after next year...

Hey guys, not to rain on the parade but...... The Devils will be hurt short term, but they will be better off long term. Cap recapture is only 350k for them. So, they may be bad this season, but they may be better off long term....

The other funny thing is they cant just go get Vanek like some think. Vanek has a higher caphit that the 6.6 Kovy had, and they dont have their first to trade for Vanek, not to mention the assets the Sabres would want. Best they can do is maybe sign Brunner/Jagr.

Hey Ilya hope u live comfortably in Russia w the money u made from the 23 million u stole from the devils Again I'm right in my analysis

Jeremy Roenick ‏@Jeremy_Roenick 24m
I'm so irate right now. I feel bad for Lou lamoriello. Gave a 100 million dollar contract to a player who has no care for the NHL!

Jeremy Roenick ‏@Jeremy_Roenick 26m
I am shocked that kovalchuk would do this to the devils and their fan base!!! Devils lose so much w this decision it's scary!!! Selfish !!!!

Jeremy Roenick ‏@Jeremy_Roenick 32m
Kovalchuk is as selfish as they come!!!! I'm appalled. I feel bad for all u devils fans. U deserve better than that!!

Jeremy Roenick ‏@Jeremy_Roenick 33m
Uwill all see now why I have talked negatively about kovalchuk !!! He doesn't want to play for the devils and he'll end up in the KHL!!!

Jeremy Roenick ‏@Jeremy_Roenick 39m
Studiest thing iv heard since Aaron Hernandez .. Kovalchuk retiring !!! Is he out of his mind??? Something is fishy

How will they be better off long term? The Devils still managed to get Kovy on a sweetheart deal. where are they going to find a top 10 player in the league for under 7M/year?

? Who are they replacing their go to guy with? Their prospects are sorely lacking, most of the big scoring guys are locked up with their current teams. If they were smart they would build through the draft now, but can they afford to do that monetarily and even stay in Jersey? Its no secret that their financials are a disaster, this is going to kill their attendance next year. No matter which angle you look at they are royally ****ed.

They just lost one of the top offensive guys in the game in his prime. Chances of them getting a similar player are pretty slim.
