"Prospect Rankings (under 35 GP)"

Bennett wasn't even an option until the #20 spot. Meanwhile, Ty Rattie, a highly touted, yet unproven prospect was part of the poll.

Since the Around the NHL thread is still locked, guess I'll post here.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/jets-bl...8716--nhl.html
So Blake Wheeler for 6 years at $5.5M, or Real Deal at $5M. This is a tough call, Wheeler can create his own offense, but it's hard to believe there is a better compliment to Geno than Neal. Certainly a better deal than the Little deal the Jets signed off on...

What do you mean locked? This is the thread we've been using for weeks to discuss other NHL happenings. IOW this IS the "Around the NHL" thread.

Given the extra time that has passed and the two players strengths the deals are about equivalent IMO. Wheeler is less of a sniper than an all-around offensive threat, but there are some similarities in their game. I'd be happy with that if I were a Jets fan, and I wouldn't be averse to trading for that one day, as a Pens fan, if we had the room.

How arrogant of him to launch a twitter program like that just to announce. Glad ESPN didn't cover it.

Fricking ego-maniac athletes.

I was referring to the "Around the NHL - Summer Updates" sticky at the bottom of the sticky section.

As far as Wheeler's contract, I agree it's a very fair deal for the team. I wonder what he would've gotten if he went to arbitration.

It might be the only way Colby can distinguish himself to the good fans of Vaxjo on or off the ice, unless they remember his car commercial.

I don't think he would have done much better, but you never know with arbitration, so I can sort of see why the Jets ponied up the dough. But re the other post, I'd take Neal in a heartbeat over Wheeler.

I agree only because we have geno. Wheeler can create more on his own, so if I didn't have an elite playmaker, I probably prefer wheeler at his price.

He could have tweeted it in Swedish at the very least. What an insular, egotistical jerk!

Just a comment on this past offseason.

How many here have thought that Letang would be gone after this year, and have thought that for a few years now. Raise your hands.

I had pretty much already said goodbye to him in my mind. Malkin I hoped would sign but gave a slightly less than 50/50 chance of losing. Kunitz, Dupuis? Gone and gone.

To lock Malkin and Letang up for basically the remainder of best part of their careers, for face it, very reasonable salaries long term, is remarkable. Kunitz and Dupuis were gravy.

Bylsma was the only downer of the whole offseason.

If anyone were to ask who had the best offseason in the NHL this season, I would argue that the Pens did and it was not even close. And totally beyond any expectations that I had.

Let's talk Pirates . . .

As for the Pens I call them as I sees 'em. Despite what I said above, I see next year as another fail because I see nothing to indicate that Bylsma will correct any of the obvious flaws which have held this team back in recent post seasons. Long term though these signings are going to be looked back at as bargains in the not too distant future, maybe as soon as after this coming year. Does that help redeem my user name?

I actually pretty much agree with everything you said. I wouldn't say we won the offseason, but no other team had a more important offseason. We locked up 2 of our 3 best players so it was a really big deal. Personally, I knew Malkin would sign long term and figured we'd either sign Letang or get a really good return. I'm glad he was retained.

As for this season, I don't have any expectations other than to make the playoffs. The rest will remain to be seen. I'm most excited to see Bennett and Despres get full time roles.

Ive always thought Wheeler would be a good fit on Sids line. I also wanted Ladd from Chicago on Sids left when they were shedding salary, and ironically enough Ladd and Wheeler are linemates now.

so apparently buying out John-Michael Liles is a strategy that the Leafs could employ...interesting stuff on the new CBA vis--vis arbitration and buy-outs...

Wild lost $30M last season. Nice job Liarpold. Cash calls abound.

Eh I don't think it's a big deal. They paid ridiculous bonuses to those guys. I'm sure they will gain it back in the future years assuming they go on a few deep playoff runs.

That's a big assumption (deep playoff runs) and right now I don't think they're close to a deep playoff run. Maybe if they upgrade their G, and Granlund and Coyle both become the players they are expected to be... and Nino N. finally steps his game up... then they'd have the depth to do it, but right now they're pretty far from "big playoff run" territory. They stand to lose more money the next couple seasons IMO.
