Predict the Red Wing's lineup in 5-6 years

Taking into account our current players, who will retire and what young guys will step up, our prospects, etc.

What do you think our lineup will look like? Obviously can't predict trades or anything like that but give it a go!

The biggest challenge will be to find replacements for Z and D..

We have enough talent on our prospects to fill out our bottom 6 and second line forwards down the road.

But unless we have access to lottery picks or sign a superstar free agent (both options being unlikely or undesirable). We won't be on the list of elite teams after Z and D leave/retire.

On the defense, even though we don't have #1 or 2 D yet, I was impressed by Babcock's defense by committee approach, which should keep us in the hunt for SC.

But without the superstar center/forward combo, we will eventually be paddling up the creek without any paddles. Just my opinion.

Nyquist Jarnkrok- Top 6 FA
Weiss Z Mantha
Frk Helm Jurco
Abby Sheahan Millsy

Kronner-DeKeyser
Sproul-Smith
XO-Kindl

Howie
Mrazek

So hard to predict but I do think much of the lineup will be homegrown, Dats retiring will free up cash to get a top 6 forward. Could see them getting a upper level stay at home D man...prospect pool seems to be more offensive oriented D. Everyone seems to dislike Tatar in the organization... I'll be shocked if he's even on the team when the season starts to be honest.

Don't mean to derail this thread but I don't understand this comment. Can you supply any quotes that back this up. During the lockout coaches and management were raving about him while they were at the games.

Why the "organization dislikes Tatar"
(quoted for quote-unquote effect)

1. He's not Swedish.
2. Jeff Hoggan said he's late all the time and doesn't adhere to the dress code
3. He got demoted.

So basically there's no facts to back up the claim besides TMZ level drama?

Kids been put through the ringer just to play up... while Cleary bumbles out there with no accountability whatsoever.

I'll give it a go...

Jurco Jarnkrok Nyquist
Tatar Zetterberg Mantha
Sheahan Helm Franzen
Andersson Athanasiou Ferraro
HM: Tvrdon

Backman Kronwall
Sproul Dekeyser
Smith Jensen
HM: Marchenko

Mrazek
Patterson

Obviously unrealistic being no FAs or trades, but the trend in the capped leagues is toward small free agent pools and internal growth of draftees.

Agreed, also saw a quote from Holland of him praising our prospect depth and how they've held on to draft picks and plan to build heavily internally going forward. Can't remember where I saw it exactly, but it was a site that was covering the development camp.

We have so many prospects coming up and this is so far away. I can't even begin to imagine who's going to be there, and who won't.

“Tatar’s one of those guys all year that I saw that when the game’s on the line he just seemed to get better and better,” Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill told MLive.com. “He’s got that kind of character and mental toughness. He really wants to win, and learned how to handle his emotions.”

“They’ve got a lot of kids down there that we (like),” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said on CBC’s After Hours program on Saturday night. “Landon Ferraro, Tomas Jurco, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Tatar.

“They're all playing regularly, they're all contributing,'' Holland said. “Tatar is only 22, just a kid. He's one of the leaders on that team".

These are a few from Mlive from this year. What I was talking about in the previous post was Babcock and Holland being interviewed during the intermissions of the Griffins games.

Your turn.

These threads pop up time to time and usually they're entertaining to read even after 2 seasons, three tops. The Red Wings, though, are almost stagnant enough with trading roster players lately you might be able to get some predictions going.

I don't know.
I sense that Tatar isn't viewed as highly as Nyquist. I can see why, looking at the AHL regular season stats.
But given the AHL playoffs and what I saw of each player in the NHL this year, I think that Tatar, while maybe not wellrounded, is probably the kind of guy this team really needs --- at the moment.
Maybe that changes in a couple years...but truthfully, how many shoot-first guys do we really have in the system?
Tatar
Frk.
Maybe Pulkkinen
Mantha.

I don't think we see Frk near the lineup for 2-3 years. Same with Mantha. Not sure Pulkkinen is even a shoot-first guy, and not sure he's all that good -- but we'll see.

Nyquist - Weiss - Jurco
Sheahan - Helm - Athanasiou
Ferraro - Andersson - Abdelkader
Tvrdon/Pulkkinen

Kronwall - Ericsson
Dekeyser - Smith
Sproul - Ouellet
Backman

Howard
Mrazek

some guys were just super hard to decide on to keep in or out, we have a lot of top 6 potential on the LW/RW

I have probably spent the last 15 minutes just trying to think of what our D pairings would look like in 5-6 years. Holy **** are we looking at a traffic jam.

Kronwall, Ericsson, Smith, Kindl, Dekeyser, Sproul, Ouellet, Jensen, Backman, Marchenko, Nedomlel.

Kronwall-Ericsson
Smith-Dekeyser
Ouellet-Sproul
Backman?Jensen?

Kindl traded.

I don't even know. We have legit D prospects IMO. Not enough room it seems.

I think Backman and Jensen are both good prospects.

The number of guys we have in the pipeline on F and D that are supposed to be pretty good is very heartening. I realize not all of them will make it, but even if just some of them do, the cabinets are stocked. Add them to the list of guys we have that are young and should stick around for the next 5 years, and I like it.

Barring trades/catastrophic injury, in 5 years...

Tatar, Nyquist, Andersson will be under 30. Helm and Abby will only be 31. Frk, Mantha, Pulk, Jurco, AA, Ferraro, Jarnkrok will be under 30. Most of them are well projected to be at least third liners, more like 2nd. More than that, Jurco has shown a great deal in the AHL, especially in the playoffs.

Defense is promising, but less certain. They're all young, but the ones we're excited about haven't even tasted the AHL yet. Who knows.

I feel pretty good about the future. The Wings are good drafters, they've had to be. Just a few key moves in FA/Trades and the team should be contenders year in year out.
