Warren Zevon Appreciation

I think it's about time someone appreciated him.

(My theme song in several ways)

I went weak with this. He has a horde of songs that epitomize dark humor. Surely, I'm not the only fan here?

My sig for the last several months has been related.

He's one of the most under-appreciated American songwriters. My dad had all his albums playing in the house when I was young and that's how I got into him. At his drunken peak, he was one of the best live acts around too, 'Stand In The Fire' is probably my favorite live album. If anyone is into music biographies, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is a great book about him, definitely worth a read to really see just how nuts he was.

And probably my favorite song of all time:

First Kids in the Hall, now Warren Zevon? You guys are buttering me up.

I fkn LOVE Warren Zevon. Pretty sure I haven't heard a song as honest as Keep Me in Your Heart For A While since some of George Harrison's post-Beatles productions. That line, "There's a train leaving nightly called When It's All Been Said and Done//keep me in your heart for a while" just blows me away with its imagery and literary irony.

Always a big fan of his. Loved that he was able to spend a bunch of time on Letterman (filling in for Paul) before he passed away. Just seemed like a genuine guy with a wicked wit that came across through his music.

Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty consider him a songwriting role model. That's a high compliment to his abilities. Keep Me In Your Heart is a real gutpunch when you consider its context; another one from that album is She's Too Good For me...talk about a dying man's regrets, sheesh.

And one of my favorite lines from any song is "They say love conquers all, you can't start it like a car, you can't stop it with a gun."

Another fantastic tune, what an opening verse.

I worked hard, but not for the money
I did my best to please
I used to think it was funny
'Til I realized it was all a tease

the first lines in "keep me in your heart for awhile" get me every time.

shadows are fallin' and i'm runnin' out of breath
keep me in your heart for awhile
if i leave you it doesn't mean i love you any less
keep me in your heart for awhile

"enjoy every sandwich"

"I was staying at the Marriot, with Jesus and John Wayne.."

what a great talent. his music has picked me up some days. ****** day at work, get in the car and light up a smoke and turn on some Warren. By the time I'm home, I'm in a completely different mood.

"Poor Poor Pitiful Me" is another fantastic tune. I especially love the version on Learning To Flinch. Oh, and Mr. Bad Example. Every verse in both songs is just funny as hell.

I've always considered it kind of tragic that he's best known for Werewolves of London; as far as I'm concerned not much more than a novelty song. He has written so much more and so much better than that. Man I was hit hard with his last appearance on Letterman. Everyone knew he didn't have long to live and Letterman devoted his entire show to him.

Part 1 of 4.

His last song on Letterman.

Warren himself was a bit baffled by Werewolves being his biggest hit; for instance, he thought Lawyers, Guns and Money should have been a much bigger single. I agree.
