I agree. However the Toews deal could be justified as he does so much however that Kane deal is gonna be an albatross in 4/5 years.

Great player, good cap hit, great term. In a few years 6.5mil/yr will be peanuts. Maybe the most underrated player in the league. The guy can go into beast mode when it counts, in the last 7:27min of that infamous game 7 against the leafs, he got two goals & an assist.

This contract blows away those signed by Kane and Toews. He signed this a year ago, not 7.

As a Habs fan, I ****ing hate this.

What a steal of a contract. If Kane is worth 10.5, Bergeron is worth 100.

In what way? Costing $4 million less per season? If that's your only metric to judge them by then yeah, blows them away.

Uh, yeah. Costing 4 million less while being a dominant 2-way center like Toews is very good. It is going to be much easier to build around Bergeron's contract than it would even 1 of Toews or Kane. That sort of thing matters.

What a steal imo. Patrice vs Toews at their respective cap hits, I'd take bergeron everytime.

Agreed. Not really a fan of the B's, but just one year removed and Bergy is making $4M less than Toews. Thats not chump change at all, thats the difference between having another solid secondary player a la the reigning Conn Smythe winner and not.

I'd rather have Bergeron at 6.5 than Toews OR Kane at 10.5.

With Bergeron, they can sign another very good player at 4.0 per season, OR they can sign 2 good 3rd liners. We all know these role players are so important, esp for playoff teams.

Boston is really really reallyyy lucky to have Bergeron, especially at that cap hit.

Good deal. I say fair for Boston for sure. He didn't take a huge discount but if this was the open market someone would've overpaid for sure with around 8.

Wow, Boston got a hell of a great deal. Especially in light of the Toews and Kane signings.

Good job Boston! Much more rational than the nonsense in Chicago.

For some reason I read that as Patrick Berglund. I was like, is Berglund = Kopitar-good???

Now I'm ok, Bergeron is Kopitar-good.

Bergeron is a good player now but I don't like the term of this contract - signed shortly after the Bruins traded away Seguin after mysteriously more or less blaming the kid for the fact the Bruins didn't win the cup. My opinion then and still is now, the Bruins and Chiarelli treated Seguin poorly and in a few years Bergeron will slow down and the Bruins will regret having traded away Seguin.

Not sure why people are comparing this to Toews and Kane, but Bergeron was pretty invisible in the Habs Bruins series - Toews and Kane are never invisible. I'd say that is worth some extra money. I don't even think Bergeron is the best center on his team. Mind you, his team was one of if not the top team in the regular season last year, so that is not saying he's bad, but I wouldn't call him elite by any stretch. Certainly not in the conversation for best player in hockey, which Toews is IMO. Apples and Oranges.

People need to realize this thread is from 2013. They did not re-sign him this summer for these numbers.

What? Patrick Kane is a better player than Patrice Bergeron, regardless of the contract.

Yeah, you could get 2/3rds of a Bolland or an Orpik.

On the UFA market, $4M gets you squat.
