All-Purpose Replace Ilya Kovalchuk Proposal thread [Mod Post #321]

For obvious reasons.

Discuss.

MOD EDIT: Since everyone and their dog is going to be posting scenarios where their expensive players/cast-offs are going to be going to New Jersey to try to replace the retiring Ilya Kovalchuk, let's try to confine all those offers to one thread.

Ales Hemsky and Thomas Vanek make the most sense, really, but my guess is the Devils sign Jaromir Jagr and call it a day.

Brian Gionta to NJ

With the retirement of Kovy, they lose a lot of firepower up front. Gionta has 1 year left at 5 millions and could help lighten the loss of Kovalchuk.

Any renewed interest in Gionta from NJ fans?

Cammi to NJ?

What would NJ give up to get him?

You guys NEED scorers to stay out of the bottom this year, could you imagine giving up a top 5 or top 3 pick?

I don't think NJ could come up with a sufficient package to acquire him. A 1st round pick is going to be required and I don't believe they get a 1st next year.

Larsson straight up?

Devils were looking to move a defenseman, and Larsson is probably the only one of enough value, imo.

I think NJ will just have to go out a spend their recently acquired cap space on free agents. They don't have the assets to get Vanek. Maybe they could go after Cammalleri.

Hahahahaha. This was quick.

Sure, Larsson for Vanek and a conditional first and third rounder, conditional on Vanek re-signing. If he re-signs, no picks for you.

I don't even know, I'm just throwing that out there.

Honestly he's irreplaceable right now. He single-handedly creates offence and runs the PP. The devils were awful without him last season.

I actually think Vanek makes a ton of sense for NJD.

Jagr won't even cone close to replacing Kovy, and even if they sign Jagr, that would only be for a year, which does not help them long term. Vanek would be a prime candidate for sure

Heatley for a conditional 6th.

Minnesota gets cap space, NJ gets a warm body that might still be able to pot 30. Big emphasis on 'might'

I wonder if Lou is going to see the handwriting on the wall (Free agents departing, retirements, etc.), throw in the towel and move the team into an early rebuild cycle. I know they don't have a first round pick next year but they must have enough assets to at least come close to recovering that loss.

Could Brunner or Grabovski be an option?
