Vinny Prospal will not return to Columbus

per Aaron Portzline
Quote:
#CBJ have not stated it so bluntly, but seems unlikely - at this point - that RW Vinny Prospal will be back next season.
Quote:
Reached via email, Prospal declined to comment beyond saying he didn't know what to say.
Quote:
Club's position makes sense. Lots of guys pushing for more ice time, not a lot of cushion under the salary cap if Prospal makes his $2M.
Quote:
At this point, Prospal is the only #NHL player who led his team in scoring last year AND isn't under contract to return.
(He later amended this to include RFA Chris Stewart)
Quote:
Nothing official from the club, yet. Just late-night musings after a day spent reading tea leaves.
I'm pretty surprised, but, then again, this happens a lot when new management takes over a team and likes to bring in their own guys. If I'm a team in Columbus' division next year with cap space, I'd be calling Prospal tomorrow morning and offering him a spot because he's shown in the past to be a very proud guy who plays his best hockey when he's been called into question. I bet he'd have some very big games against the Jackets next year, given the opportunity.

I would have like Prospal over Bouchard, but sadly I think that shipped has sailed for the Isles. He'll be great for whatever team picks him up.

He would be a great fit on the Kings if he can play the left side. Prospal - Richards - Carter is a great line.

The consensus is he'd be a great fit on the Kings. Prospal - Richards - Carter. Sign me up! See ya Penner!

I would have taken Prospal back instead of all UFAs the Rangers signed this year.

If we have the cap room to sign him to a cheap deal, I'd love him in LA.

He'd slot perfectly with the Flyers on their 3rd line. Brings energy, skill, grit. The total package.

I hear LA has a lot of sunlight. I wouldn't know. The sun hurts.

This hoping the Kings take a stab at him, would be a perfect fit. A reasonably priced one year deal and we could have our second line left winger, filling the last hole in our lineup.

How does the depth chart look like for Columbus next season?

Prospal-Kesler-Burrows? Booth-Schroeder-Prospal?

I don't know... I'm just shooting in the dark now. Gillis should grab SOMEONE.

Does he play RW or LW? Jets have a spot open on their 3rd line.

Prospal is a natural left wing. Only played right wing at times last season because the Jackets had so many left wings like Calvert, Umberger, Foligno, and Dubinsky when he wasn't in the middle IIRC. The Jackets are pretty strong on the wing after the Horton signing.

As for the rumor, kind of surprising to me. Prospal said a year ago when he re-signed in Columbus that he'd retire as a Blue Jacket and the Jackets told him they'd have a job for him within the organization when he decided he was finished. Mind you, that was the old management (Howson and Co.) so Kekalainen might have different plans. If Prospal still wants to play I'd imagine a handful of teams are contacting him. Kings seem like a good one and I always could picture him in Boston when he was available in the past.

I'd take him on the Oilers. We need more quality veterans.

As for his tan, we have Fabutan.

If the Kings could manage to sign him that would fill out our roster.

Brown - Kopitar - Williams
Prospal - Richards - Carter
Frattin - Stoll - Toffoli
Clifford/King - Lewis - Nolan
ex: Fraser

Doughty - Regehr
Mitchell - Voynov
Muzzin - Greene
ex: Ellerby/Schultz

Quick
Scrivens

Cap space isn't the only issue. When you miss Kyle Calder and Ladislav Nagy, you know someone sucks.

Would be a decent pickup for the Yotes if we can't package one of our veteran D for a top 6 forward. Should fit nicely with Hanzal and Vrbata.
