NHL on another network not named NBC?

Sorry if its a stupid question or a question already answered here before....but i didnt know where else to ask it. Mods can lock it up after i get a answer.

I just wanted to ask...why doesnt NHL sign on with another network as well besides NBC? Would that not draw better ratings??

The NFL has....well everybody lol. I really dont wanna compare NHL to NFL.

But..

NBA has TNT, ABC and ESPN
MLB has Fox, TBS and ESPN

NHL has NBC (and yes NBCSN but its still NBC)

You wont see NHL commercials anywhere else other than NBC channels. NBA and MLB markets themselves in several channels.

Is there a reason NHL doesnt do this?

NBC signed an exclusive deal with the league. They wanted NBCSN to be the home for the NHL, the flagship for their network.

Also, you say NBC is NBC. Then why don't you say ESPN is ABC? They're the same thing as well under your standard.

I see. Pretty stupid. I think the NHL shouldve given themsleves a bit more wiggle room and atleast signed on with one more Network. I love NBC coverage dont get me wrong.

Something how like ESPN and ABC hook up. On ABC it looks like a ESPN broadcast. NBCSN and another network hookin up wouldve been cool.

More marketing power that way also

Right...the NHL is stupid for taking the best TV deal they've ever had.

The NHL is also on a number of regional carriers so they get their message out on those mediums as well.

I love how this board has forgotten that the $120 mil per season ESPN contract actually happen a decade or so ago.

Well, $200M > $120M. Not sure how it would adjust for inflation.

And from a coverage standpoint it's not contest. 1st deal with every playoff game on TV + most money = best deal ever.

The NHL got way more money signing an exclusive deal with NBC than they would have gotten by cobbling three rights holders together.

NBC and NBCSN's coverage are almost exactly the same in terms of bugs and other branding. There's no difference between a game on the network and one on cable... it's the opposite of the ESPN on ABC deal, but the principle is the same.

ESPN and ABC are the same people, they're both owned by Disney. ABC sports is run by ESPN. It's pretty much exactly the same as NBC/NBC Sports, except that ABC Sports and ESPN are technically independent of each other because one has some minority ownership by Hearst and the other doesn't.

You're part of the minority, I'd say. I didn't have any issue locating games 2 and 3 of the final...

Maybe so. I just don't have NBCSN, just whatever channels you get when you plug in the TV. No cable.

Not for nothing, but haven't there been rumors about the NHL possibly being on the verge of working out a deal with limited numbers of games on Fox Sports 1 as well?

Unfortunately, having cable isn't even a guarantee of that. For DirecTV at least, NBCSN is sort of a premium channel, and only available in the higher tier packages. Meanwhile, someone with basic cable can still catch the majority of national broadcasts for the NFL, MLB, and NBA (as ESPN and TNT are part of the basic package). I'm hoping NBCSN is working to try to get into more households, but not holding my breath. I just can't really justify the extra $20+ a month just so I can get the NHL's national provider.

I'd love it if the USA network carried the NHL. They carry Olympic hockey and are a part of the NBC network.

I doubt that there is another (non-sports) network that WANTS to broadcast hockey.

It's that way with Dish not DirecTV. My parents have Dish and would have to buy a higher tier to get NBCSN. I got it in the basic tier on DirecTV that has ESPN etc.

On TWC the bump up to get NBCSN and NHLn (& several college sports channels) is $5 a month.

No. NBCSN is not included in the basic Choice package - D*'s most common package. You need to pay $5/mo extra for the Choice Xtra package in order to get NBCSN.
