The guy is turning more and more senile every day.

Besides that, some of his opinions are just ridiculous. I'm actually embarrassed to have him be a "Canadian icon".

The only one thing that I have to commend him for is his support for the troops.

His schtick is over the top to the point where one almost has to wonder if it's satire, but frankly I don't think he's that clever. He's the Rush Limbaugh of hockey with the distinction that Grapes actually believes the bile he spews.

When he talks hockey he's great. He knows the game. I respect that.

I respect him as an entertainer, and he often has good points about on ice play, but his senile ramblings, over the top patriotism and xenophobic profilings kind of kill the magic.

I like that he's always looking out for kids and teaching them how to play the game right.

I don't like his bigotry.

Ok, he makes a few outlandish comments on women/foreigners, but he's usually partly right anyways.

Ex. I'm yet to see a Yzerman/Bergeron playoff performance from a Russian
I've yet to see a Yzerman like performance from anyone. Especially a black person, openly gay person or Jewish person. Now, why did what I just said seem horribly wrong?

Dusts off my little scale:
Don Cherry's scale of player greatness

10 Doug Gilmour

9 Kingston Boy

8 Ontario or BC boy

7 Boy from any other part of Canada except Quebec unless he wears visor

6 Members of the Women's hockey team

5 Any Guy from Europe or Quebec who is exceptionally good

4 Any guy from quebec, or visor wearing guy(Unless he had eye injury)

3 Figure skaters

2-0 Insert most Russians, swedes here.

Absolutely none.

The guy is a senile old windbag of a hack who should have been put in a nursing home ages ago.

His schtick and fashion sense are an embarrassment to Canada IMO.

Something is wrong there.

Didn't like his comments toward Yakky's celly, also he's a big Leafs homer.

I'm happy he exist, but I just don't take him seriously. He's a mascot.

So none of those answers.

I don't agree with him a lot, but at least he's willing to speak with conviction and can back his opinions up. It's a rarity in the media these days.

Now, if he'd stop intentionally mispronouncing the names of Canucks players, I'd probably have more respect for him ...

The only honest man on tv giving his true thoughts not some politically correct mumbo jumbo. The guy is right on a lot of things no matter how ridiculous they sound. I'm impressed that he's 79 years old and he looks that good.

Thumbs up

Lets GO!

Love Don. I don't always agree with him, but I love what he does and his conviction. The way he manages to rile people up is great too.

Sometimes he says things that get my respect, and then sometimes he says things that lose my respect. I'm in between.

I don't need to respect him, I watch him for entertainment purposes purely. Even though he can't make his points as succinctly anymore, his general stances haven't changed, so my respect wouldn't have changed over the years much anyway.

So going on TV and directly arguing that Canada should have gone into Iraq, then getting mad when MacLean had the guts to disagree, isn't "spreading war propaganda"?

Did he say that on the hockey show or somewhere else? Because if that's on the show, man is that sad.

Other than supporting his troops which I'll give him props for, I have zero respect for the guy. He takes his xenophobia and racism towards europeans/russians to the extreme. Then lights it on fire and rides it over the gumdrop rainbow into crazytown.

I hesitated between the last two options.

If these 5 options were divided in tiers of 20% (100-81, 80-61, etc.) my vote would be at 21%.

It would be unfair to say that he always speaks nonsense, but on the other hand he is kind of bullyish and full of himself.

He often gives me the impression of being surprised that something he said in the past takes place eventually.

Kudos to him for realising how his bread is buttered and playing that role almost perfectly.

People get way, way too bent out of shape about him.

So he goes on TV and says stupid things. So what? If anything, the lightning rod he's created over the years has probably had the effect of creating a real dialogue about prejudice in the sport. It's the opposite of what he intended, but at least the conversation is happening. That's a good thing.

When he's not being a xenophobe, he's a pretty smart hockey guy. I just treat him like the drunken uncle at Thanksgiving who has some good pointers about where to buy beer underage.
