Is it easier to score/rack up points in the East?

For the past few seasons, players from the East have consistently dominated the league leaders in scoring.

While the East does boast more top end talent (Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Stamkos etc), it does seem as though the East is more offensive orientated, with defence coming second, whereas the West is more of a grind, with most teams playing a gritty defensive style.

Just a quick look at the goals for last season where as we know, each Conference only played within itself:

East: 2006 goals scored.
West: 1909 goals scored.

So my question is: Is it easier to score goals and rack up points in the East, than it is in the West?

The East was bad for a long time and drafted superstars at the right time.

Crosby
Malkin
OV
Stamkos
Kessel
Tavares

vs.

Kane
Hall

Then a UFA like Gaborik came East.

This isn't meant to be an East vs West thread, let's hope that the fans on HF can be objective, rather than just vote based on whatever their favorite team is.

Eastern teams shouldn't feel the need to be defensive over this, just because it's easier to score in a conference doesn't mean that the conference is inferior.

Better defensive teams in the West... better goaltending support with those defensive teams.

So... yes.

The cool thing is we're going to find out based on how Zetterberg and Datsyuk do in the East next season.

Or simply by how the Wings are a lot higher in the standings against the weaker defenses in the East.

As a fan of an East team, yes. I think it's slightly exaggerated by some people who think moving East would add ~20 points to players' point totals, but I do think it's easier to get points in the East than the West.

Definitely not. There might be more "good" teams in the West, but the absolute worst are all there too.

While it's not a massive difference, I do believe there is a difference in difficulty of scoring goals between the two conferences.

A lot of defensive minded teams in west. Kings, Blues, hawks, ducks etc

A lot of high scoring powerhouses in east. Pens, Flyers, lightning, leafs etc

The best offensive players are in the East, if they would play in West they would still be the leading scorers and the best offensive players, as simple as that it is.

Leafs are about as defensive as they come... as well as Boston, Devils etc.

You can't just looks at goal scored. Maybe the top players in the East are just better.

It's better to look at non-stars and see how their scoring is different after changing conferences

Yeah, the West has way more defense oriented systems on teams like the St. Louis Blues and Phoenix Coyotes etc

What the..?

The Leafs were dead last in the league in shots against at 5v5. Literally the worst. Only Buffalo and Edmonton were even close.

No they're not. Toronto scores the majority of its goals off the rush and allows the most amount of shots against in the league.

The reason the players in the West score less is because they are more tired with all the travel.
