The reality of the situation is that we've had PP QB's post-lockout, but until Del Zotto arrived, we never had a defensemen running the show. Jagr and Nylander ran a top-10 ranked PP for two seasons post-lockout. Then Nylander was replaced by Gomez and our PP tanked. It wasn't revitalized until Del Zotto's rookie year when it jumped 5% and went from 2nd to last in the NHL to just outside the top-10.

The problem isn't the lack of a PP QB at all. It's a lack of movement, coaching, and the team's insistence that because Del Zotto slumped in his sophomore year, we needed to go get Brad Richards to run the point. If there's one thing Del Zotto can do, it's run a NHL power-play. However, when he's the "shooter" on the point with Richards being the QB, it's not a good configuration. In fact, the best PP I've seen this team produce in recent years was when Moore and MDZ were on the points and Richards' ass was glued to the bench.
You need an offensive punch from the blueline to open things up in the game today. We don't have that.

Sure you can have a forwards there, but Richards needs a right handed shot next to him. Like Boyle in Tampa or Zubov in Dallas. We can replace Richards, but that makes him meaningless to have on the roster.

I agree about Del Zotto. But he is also not playing much. He is our nr 3 LD.

We also had a decent PP built more than anything else around Prospal, Gabby and Del Zotto. But that was a PP set up from the left side of the ice. MDZ isn't effective on a PP set up from the right side of the ice. Richards isn effective if the pp is set up on the left side. There is a huge diffrence for players if the PP is set up on the left or right side. I saw AO play once for Russia on a PP set up on the left side. All he could do was park infront of the net in a Holmstrom role. What else could he as a right shooting sniper do?

We have Girardi on the right side. We have Staal and McD on the left side. We struggle a lot offensively, on the PP but also 5 on 5. If you don't think we should try to pick up a right shooting D with offensive ability we just have to agree to disagree. It's completely impossible to convince me that we don't. It's by far the bigges hole we have in the lineup.

Yes, even with doing nothing else, sending Johnson down gives us 4m. That's around what he should get IMO. They r prob negotiating long term vs bridge deal

We have a 23 year old who was 18th overall in defensive scoring in 11-12, and a 24 year old defender who has been top-10 in ES scoring among defensemen the last two years. How much more punch do we really hope to get from back there?

Richards is meaningless to have on the roster to begin with, IMO. His decision making is lousy and he's constantly making lazy plays on the power play. I think he's always been overrated on the PP as he's always had another elite passer on the unit with him. A RH shot is fine, but how about an established RH shot? Not someone who might end up as a #6 guy next fall if everything falls into place. Get someone with tangible NHL experience. Hell, go get Cody Franson for all I care, but that means that one of our current defensemen has to go. That's a lot of moving pieces just so we can add a RH shot to the point.

How about Wheeler? Whats he expected to pull in as an RFA? Can we entice Winnepeg with the ol' Boyle/MDZ/st croix gag for him and Potsma?

Canes have signed Nathan Gerbe. One-year, two-way. Interesting pickup.

Bargain basement hunting. The Rangers could bring a player in on a tryout with the understanding that a contract will be signed when the team clears space right before the season starts. Assigning Asham and Powe clears $1.85M. Maybe the Rangers can swap them for players who can be sent to the AHL without a cap penalty. Both of those players can still contribute. Moving Boyle and/or Pyatt would save $ and open up a roster spot.

Does this mean that they have signed their quota of leprechauns and we are alone on Tolchinsky?

I didn't think about it that way. They only have 45 contracts so most likely not.

Jim Cerny was asked in a chat about the prospect camp guys getting contracts a few weeks ago. He said if the Rangers wanted to sign one of the players in camp, they would have signed the player by now.

I wonder if they are waiting to see how they play in Traverse City.

Assuming Staal is healthy from day one of camp(all the indications are yes),where is this defenseman playing? McDonagh and Staal are gobbling up a ton of minutes on the left side. Move DZ to the right so he can actually play. Samuelsson can help DZ with the transition to the right side. Yandle is a lefty and he played some right side in PHX. Samuelsson played a a key role in Yandle's development. Girardi. Moore. Stralman. Falk.
