I really like Stepan's game, but I have to go with Backes.

Stepan imo. What has Stastny done during the past two years to be leading this poll? (Not trying to diss Stastny here, he's a good player). Stepan has been considerably better than him imo, and so have Backes and Pavelski.

It might have something to do with his international play. He's been very good at the last two WC scoring 24 points in 18 games. He was the second leading scorer in the tournament this year while captaining the USA to a medal.

Stastny. The USA needs a center who can score, and, despite his recent struggles, I believe he can deliver that in spades. I think he'd do well alongside our more offensive wings as well.

Stepan is the ultimate international player for the US, so I don't see why that should be a knock against him....

I'd go Stastny but it will be 2/3 and could go either way.

I want backes on a 3rd line with brown and some other banger. Pavelski for the 2nd line. Very underrated player.

Just as Canada's goalie depth isn't so hot compared to the USA's.

Stepan. I think he's better than Stastny at this point and he makes the most sense on a scoring line at #2 ( with Pavs #3, and Backes #4). Stastny might make it due to his USA resume though

You don't really need much goalie depth though lol. You need one guy not to get hurt.

Third line needs to be Brown - Backes - Callahan.

Stastny has 32 points in 25 games internationally for the US and 3 in the Olympics during the Silver medal run. He captained the WC last time.

How is Stepan higher up on the charts than Stastny internationally at this point?

I know Rangers fans love to comment on his points this half season, but realistically he needs to continue that to start the 2013-14 season to be in the hunt for a center spot with Team USA, rather than 13th/14th forward.

Meanwhile Stastny also has to show something himself now that the Avs got rid of the life sucking leech known as Sacco. But it seems pretty black and white that Stastny is the more likely player than Stepan today for a top 6 center spot.

You might want to check out Stepan's international competition resume

Hmm, that might definitely be a factor. He hasn't impressed me that much in the NHL during the last two season but he might be one of those guys who always seem to raise their game in international tournaments. If he does get in the team then I agree with most people that he needs to be in an offensive line (guys like Backes or Pavelski can do the heavy lifting). In that case the 2C spot might suit him.

Center is the United States' weakest position and still they can run Kesler, Stastny, Backes, Stepan down the middle.

What order those four are used in, I'm not so stressed about. But if we're going top 6 position, I'm picking between Stepan and Stastny and going with the more tenured player in Stastny.

No love for Galchenyuk? , just wait till 2018

Voted for Stepan though, although many can argue that it should be Backes, his game is much more suited for the 3rd line here.

I've heard people under-rate the American squad, but their top 6, I have to admit, is pretty solid:

Ryan-Kesler-Kessel (good luck commentator)
Pacioretty-Stepan-Kane

not bad if you ask me

Surprised Backes is getting such high votes. He's a very good player but can struggle offensively at times. Personally I have him on the 4th line:

Ryan -Kesler - Kane
Parise - Stepan/Stastny - Kessel
Pacioretty - Pavelski - Callahan
Brown - Backes - Oshie

Obviously there's a lot of good players there, so line numbers don't matter too much, but I think the top two lines will clearly be the ones with Kane and Kessel on them, and I doubt Backes plays with either of them

Backes is more suited for the third line as he can provide offense and play physically (he can play decent shutdown too, unless St.L fans say otherwise). I personally think Stepan is overrated, but he does have 7 in 7 playing at the WC. Stastny has also been equal to or greater than PPG in international outings. I take Stastny for 2C.
