It is underwhelming and awful.
It's essentially RNH and his 5 years of RFA years and Smid locked up long term for Kadri and Phaneuf who is a year away from UFA.
I wouldn't even do this deal if Phaneuf was locked up only because I think that RNH easily has the most potential of this group.

i think this would be a bad move for both teams.

yes rnh is good, but I personally need to see what kadri can do in a full season.
phaneuf is only moved if nonis, already knows he can not get him signed long term at a more reasonable cap hit.

As for Mark Fraser this guy deserves at minimum a 1 year deak worth 1 mil on a one way contract, i personally would like to see him and franson locked up for 2 years.

Ok, that's based off of potential.

Not sure how anyone can even argue RNh> Kadri right now. Not to mention RNH's injuries already.

Kadri has out produced him, and is way more physical...

Overall, RNH has more points.

He has ~twenty more assists in 3 more games?

You can make the argument that Kadri is a better goal scorer. I can believe that.

I don't want to get into some ridiculous advanced stats battle.

Quality of competition versus GF/60 mins or some **** like that.

Was Kadri better last season? Yes. He had a great season.

Yes, RNH played injured and scored at a much lower rate.

the op mentioned that the deal only takes place if there is an extention between the oilers and phaneuf beforehand

Toronto has plenty of wings and needs a #1 center to build around. Edm has plenty of wings and has a #1 center to build around. Edm doesn't want to give up its young #1 center just as much as Toronto wants one. Bad trading partners.

again op mentioned that phaneuf would agree to an extension and also, the bolded makes no sense...

so you wouldn't do

So was Dipietro, Patrik Stefan, Alexandre Daigle and others.

Not saying RNH will be a bust (he will be a top 6 NHLer with a long career) but draft status is overrated and overblown.

Nonis would grab this and run if offered by Mact, don't kid yourself. The reason this is an 'awful' proposal is because it leaves the oilers where the leafs are (looking for a young #1C). Why on earth would the oilers do this?

Lowetide said it best on hib blog, I'd give up Nick Schultz and a pick for Phaneuf. He's better than some fans outside of Toronto think and worse than some fans in Toronto think. In regards to the kadri vs rnh attempted debate lol some people are silly.

You're right, 100% right. Gagner is 23 and has played 6 seasons in the NHL. Kadri is 22 and has played 1 season in the NHL and was called up/sent down in two others. Gagner has a total of 258 points, Kadri has 63. There seasons last year weren't far apart, Kadri had 18g, 22a, 44p in 48 games. Gagner 14g, 24a, 38p in 48 games.

They are very comparable, kadri played pretty soft minutes this season but he's definitely been a pleasant surprise, I said 2 years ago kid will be a solid 40 to 50 point contributor every year.

Out of curiousity, why do people feel that RNH is better than Kadri?

Honest question...I haven't seen any evidence that RNH is a better player outsite of draft position.

Sure, RNH made the League at 18 but so would have Kadri if he was drafted by the Oilers...so what is it about the player himself that makes him better?

If you subsitute Nuge for Gagner the value would be close.

Phaneuf>Smid
Gagner>Kadri

Fraser and a 2nd is more or less compensation for Phaneuf having 1 year left on a deal and the difference between a proven gagner and Kadri with 1 proven year under his belt. Or Toronto eats some of Phaneuf's salary
