I do not wanna do this as an Avs fan. Smid is a top pairing dman on an awful team and Elliott has 50 point potential.
Smid would immediately become the top pairing d-man on this team too. He's the perfect partner for Erik Johnson, but I like McGinn way too much to move him. Also, you're overrating Elliott BIG TIME. I love the kid, but over the last 5 years, these are the defenseman who have hit 50+ points in a season not including the lockout shortened season:
Hmm, Guess I was wrong with my assessment of Smid. I thought he was a second liner for Edmonton, but if he is their Number 1 then ignore the first proposal.
Would Downie, 1st and Elliott be better?
I like this less than the OP. Avs could do better with that package I think.
Downie is one of our 2 RWs and with the Avs running with 3 lines, not my first or 2nd choice for trade bait.
Smid is ideally a great 2nd pairing shutdown dman. We have Siemens coming up for that role soon, and Hejda is holding on to that role enough for now. Avs need more of a 2 way player to pair with EJ IMO.
"There's a point, far out there when the structures fail you, and the rules aren't weapons anymore, they're... shackles letting the bad guy get ahead. One day... you may face such a moment of crisis." - Jim Gordon
1: We need a guy like Downie.
2: 1st rounders rock.
3: Edmonton doesn't have enough right handed d-men in their system.
4: Even with Smid in the fold I'm convinced that Colorado is still a bottom 10 team.
Without Hainsey coming to Edmonton, I can't see this move happening, though and at the same time I don't think that Hainsey will be back in the NHL. Me thinks he's going to be the fall guy for helping the players so much in the past CBA.
Downie, Eliot and Hainsey easily make Edmonton a better team now than just having Smid there.
Our prospect pool is looking pretty damn good but having two first rounders at the next draft is of course very attractive. On top of that you'd think we could go out and blow one of those first rounders + Hemsky or Nick Schultz and get another impact player on a good contract.
This trade fills plugs at 3rd line LW and 3rd pairing RD.
We already upgraded at 2nd line LW, 2nd pairing LD and found plugs for 4th line LW, 4th line RW, back-up goalie and 3rd line C.
That's a ton of player movement would be Edmonton busiest year in a long time.
I definitely wouldn't do Downie, Elliott and a first. That's just too much for the team to give up. I do really like Smid, and I think he'd be a great addition to the team, but I'm a big believer in Elliott and I'd hate to see him tearing it up for another team. I can't handle another Shattenkirk.
