NYI/Buffalo (Vanek)

To Buffalo: Okposo, 1st round pick
To NYI: Vanek (25% salary retained)

NYI gets a top line forward, Buffalo get's a bit grittier and gets another 1st rounder next year (15-20 range)

So Vanek is willing to sign an extension in the $5.5m range, fitting into the Isles budget?

Retaining salary for one season means very little. Isles would be more concerned with them paying 100% of Vanek's extension.

Cause I doubt Snow moves either Okposo or a first alone, for 1 season of Vanek who currently makes $7m+.

Replace Okposo with Strome and we have a deal. Buffalo can eat 50% of Vaneks salary too.

Now you are entering silly season.

One yr of Vanek will not bring back a blue chip prospect.

Sabres have shopped Vanek since March. During a few fanchats, Staple has said the isles don't want to give up the young talent or the big salary on his extension.

A quality prospect (or two) and a 1st is exactly what Vanek will bring back, either this OS or at the deadline.

No thanks, I'd rather not have a guy who will be 30 and a FA after this season for arguably one of the top five prospects in the game.

A quality prospect, but not an elite one (Strome is widely considered a top-10 prospect).

Even with Okposo instead of Strome, this doesn't make sense for the Isles. The team is looking to build a core that can compete over the long haul, trading a player like Okposo for a one year rental is the exact opposite.

Plus, I doubt many see the Isles as a true Cup competitor even with Vanek. The team needs improved D and goaltending before it can go the distance. The only type of team that would give up that kind of return for Vanek is one that thinks Vanek puts them over the top.

According to a very credible source, it won't be from the isles.

Sabres have shopped Vanek since March. I think the cap dropping and Vanek's approaching ufa status, have limited the number of trade partners.

A trade deadline deal sounds like Buffalo's best option.

Strome>>>>>>>>>Vanek

Buffalo will do better than either of these proposals. Pass.

No. Okposo for Vanek is silly, with or without a first rounder. Pominville got a 1st rounder plus two legit prospects. Isles and Sabres are in pretty similar situations, so they don't make sense as trading partners for Vanek. Vanek is going to want to go to a contender and only a contender with a good shot at resigning him will be willing to give up anything good for him. Jersey seems pretty perfect.

It's pretty clear that the Islanders have no intention of acquiring a forward. It doesn't make sense with so many young NHL forwards, NHL ready prospects (Nelson, Strome) or nearly NHL ready prospects (Sundstrom, Lee).

If NYI need to spend resources to make an acquisition, it'll be because there are injuries on D, or if the goalie situation is just not working out.

What part of the isles budget can't afford Vanek, goes over your head?

What part of 7 yrs of Strome is preferrable to the Isles, then one yr of Vanek?

If you want to talk about quality prospects, we have plenty, but Strome is in another tier and not available.

Honestly I have no clue what Vanek will end up getting in return but IMO he's not going to a young team like the Isles. More likely it's an older team who has been on the cusp for awhile and needs a guy like Vanek to put them over the top.

I don't see the Isles spending assets to upgrade the defense either. They have drafted a ton of d-men and their development rates are staggered to where you could see a promotion or two to the NHL every year for the foreseeable future. Donovan and CDH look like prime candidates this upcoming season followed by Mayfield and possibly Pedan the year after. Reinhart, Pulock, Polka look like the best candidates in 2015-2016. Just like the forwards, the Isles probably plan on upgrading from within. Judging by the high price for young d-men, the Isles are doing the smart thing and can keep costs down.

Even if the Isles do spend assets to address the goaltending, it would most likely be draft picks and 2nd tier prospects being shopped. That's only if Nabby sucks and Poulin+Nilsson crap the bed.

Why would the Isles, who have tons of cap space, give up valuable assets like Okposo and/or Strome to acquire someone who'll be a free agent next year? They're presumably moving into a brand new building next season in the heart of New York City, and they can offer a competitive UFA salary and a chance to play with maybe the best offensive center in the NHL not on the Penguins. If the Sabres were to move Vanek this off season salary would need to be retained, and you'd be looking at 1st + decent prospect like Nelson or Mayfield.

I want to make sure I understand this:

#1. Okposo is 25. Not exactly a young winger.
#2. The isles struggle to score goals....yet they wouldn't be interested in one of the best pure goal scorers in the NHL.

And for the record, 1st line winger rentals do indeed bring back bluechip prospects (Which the sabres aren't asking for, they are asking for, in this case, a top 6 winger and a 1st). And that's just at the deadline, not for a full year rental like Vanek would be.

#1. 25 isn't young Only in the HF world is a guy old at 25. Vanek is a old geezer at 29 then.

#2. Isles scored the 8th most goals in the league last season. You think that is struggling?

This is a terrible proposal from the Isles point of view. No chance of doing this under any circumstance other than the Islanders in a position to win a Stanley Cup and they are not in contention as currently constructed.

If however the deadline comes and the Islanders are sitting in a top position in the east and could make a run, I could see a second tier prospect and a first round pick going for the rental, but even then its unlikely Snow will deviate from what he has been doing for 5+ seasons.

The Islanders are not interested in a rental at this time, and unless Vanek is a sign and trade no interest in giving up a top asset to a conference rival.

I'm having trouble understanding everything you just said. Isles struggle to score goals? You couldn't be more wrong! 25 isn't young, what?

Lets look at your points 1 by 1....

1) When did 25 become old?
2) The Isles were 8th in the NHL in goalscoring last year. How do they struggle to score goals?
3) Who was the last true blue-chip prospect to be moved for a pending UFA? Maybe Silfverberg would fit that criteria, and he was traded for a player under contract for 2 years. Otherwise, name a consensus top-10 NHL prospect that has been traded in recent years.
