Kessel and Phaneuf's raise

Excuse me if this has been answered already but...

Assuming we sign up all our RFAs this season it should eat up the remaining cap space we have maybe a million left to spend.

We are at the stage where a lot of guys are locked up for next season and other notable UFAs(Bolland and Kulemin) are guys we are probably going to want to re-sign.

There are usually players(LACK etc.) that are a waste of cap space and we are happy to let go at the end of the season but this team is different there isn't any terrible contracts that need to go(maybe Liles)

So my question is with limited cap space where do we get the money to give Phaneuf and Kessel raises next season?

Aaaaaaaand /thread

Although Kessel will probably demand $8M like Getzlaf and Perry, it's still only 1M more.

Kessel will definitely get more in the 8-9 mil range.. unless he falls back to a 60 point guy next year.

Hoping Nonis can get Phaneuf back at $6.5m..Kessel may ask for about $8m. We should plenty of cap space to get the other key guys back (Gardiner, Kulemin, Bolland, McClement) as well as enough cap space to go after a big name free agent if the cap does rise $70m+ like some are suggesting on the business board.

We better be signing our Kessel and Phaneuf before any of those defenceman. I'm more eager to sign Gardiner, but the rest are replaceable. Phaneuf should be receiving an upgrade and Kessel will be paid more than Semin. Seeing that we're drafting quite regularly, we should be able to replace complementary guys with EL contracts if required.

I think Kessel is 7.5-8 mill on an 8 year deal.

Phaneuf should be 6-6.5 on an 8 year deal.

I am hoping for 7.5 mill and 6 mill respectively.

So why do people think Kessel is worth about $1M less than Getzlaf, Perry, and Giroux?

Kessel gets 8 million at least.

There's no debate.

Because he's a soft one dimensional winger.

It's probably because no one wants to shell out 8m. I personally think he won't ask for more than 7.5M.

Those are my official guess-timates as well.

A lot of people say Phaneuf is overpaid, but I think if anything he's due for a raise.

If we get Bozak and Kessel for 12m we ain't doing to great. Keeping his "buddy" in town should be a direct shaving of 1m off any contract he signs here. I would not pay him a cent over 7m and both deals should have just been done together with understanding.

Bozak is a 3m guy and Kessel is a 7.5-8m guy. He should take 6.5 and 7 tops.

We are going to have the Muskoka 5 by the end of this.

The cap is going up next season so there will be plenty of cap space to give Phil a raise.

I'd be happy if Dion signed an extension for the same amount he's making now.

should be able to lock up Kessel and Phaneuf.

Might have to let go one or two of Kulemin, Bolland, McClement, Gardiner and Reimer.

I think Kessel should take a discount to play with his buddy, 7m sounds fair.

Dion at same money on an extension is fine

I fully expect the cap to go up to around 70 million, and a few GMs seem to be expecting the same thing.

Call me crazy, but I don't think Phaneuf gets a raise (or should at least). He either takes a very slight paycut or signs with the dollars he is making today. Kessel is looking at/around 7-8 Million next contract.

Be very surprised if Phanuef's term is only 5 years.

Why? With him as the #1 Dman on this team, we've finished below average in GAA in every season, this past season was the first that we cracked the top 20 (17th overall), and we've made the playoffs once since he's been here. I like Phaneuf, but I don't see him as a big upgrade over any of the following top pairing Dmen, and he's not as good as a number of them as well.

Byfgulien 5.2M
Timonen 6.0M
Yandle 5.25M
Gonchar 5.5M (prior to this season, now he's 5M, but getting older)
Edler 5M
OEL 5.5M
Keith 5.5M
Kronwall 4.75M
McDonagh 4.7M
Enstrom 5.75M
Seabrook 5.8M
Bieksa 4.6M

Only NINE defencemen in the entire league get 6.5M+, and the ones that Phaneuf is considered comparable to are considered to be overpaid defencemen... He's not a top 9 Dman league-wide. McDonagh JUST signed longterm at 4.7M, Phaneuf is NOT worth almost 2M more/year than McDonagh.

IMO he deserves around 5.75-6.0M, but will likely get 6.5-6.75M.
