You know they play hockey from October to early April, right?
He's clearly not suggesting he's needed for the playoffs.
Right, its an 82 game season. Its like people forgot this already. You're going to be St. Louis a ton and they are going to be running around. You need people to take those guys off the ice for 5 minutes.
Hawks need a couple guys to protect Kane & Toews. Doesn't have to a Carcillo type... maybe Bickell is up to the task. Teams have been taking liberties with Toews over the years.
Bollig is probably that guy.
YES and especially Toews….If Hawks continue to leave Toews exposed to goonery we run the risk of shortening his career (and perhaps significantly). Toews needs an enforcer on his line. Simple as that and I think Bickel is that guy currently.
Wishful thinking, but it would be nice if Beach could take on that role one day. Having 2 bruisers who can play in the top 6 when needed (and who can play) would be ideal, in my mind.
I could see them bringing Mayers back for another season for a few reasons: 1) He seems to love it here, and would probably come back for cheap, 2) he can still skate well, 3) he has toughness, 4) he can win faceoffs, 5) he seems to have no problem sitting out and just playing the odd game. I would have no problem with him coming back.
Mayers may be done. Deservedly got his name on the Cup. Personally think he's got some left in the tank and wish his return for 1 more for aforesaid reasons intelligently stated in this thread. Betting that Stan goes young. For the right price, Mayers could be a hedge.
Isn't it funny how teams need to be gritty to win in the playoffs and thats when the Hawks will lose because they lack that grit but you need more of the gritty enforcer type players to get through the regular season? I don't know which people's opinions I am mocking but it seems to be almost a consensus. The point is that we busted that myth by winning the Presidents Trophy and the Cup. Outside of our St Louis series when do we need a fighter? The schedules are too dispersed for there to be too much bad blood develop between teams. We just need to play our game and we will win.
Or we can just have Mayers give Beach fighting lessons. All I remember is how pathetic he looked when he fought Kassian in Chicago before the lockout ended. Fighting is an art; not every 220 pound man can do it in the NHL.
