Some Stars observations:

Mike Modano at 18 is a pure farce.. so is Turgeon making your list.. he's probably among the slowest forwards on this team. Bill Guerin, the winner of the fastest skater competition 2 or 3 years ago, should be on it, and in the top 20 at least.

Jere Lehtinen has some wheels too, though probably not as fast to be worth mentioning.

Simon Gagne is faster then half the people on the list.

Also being a Sundin fan, I don't consider him the 33rd fastest player in hockey. He doesn't have "wheels", Mogilny on the other hand, is much faster then you have him ranked.

Kovalev isn't top 10 fast IMO. He is a very good skater, but he doesn't have that extra gear that guys like Fata, Koltsov, and Chimera have.

I'd say Koltsov and Chimera are 1a and 1b.

I sort of expected this, but I would have to have Legwand in the top 10-15. He's surely faster than most of your list and close to Modano.

Didn't Bill Guerin win the fastest skates at the All-Star competition in 2000?

As a Kovalev fan, I see his speed consistently overrated. He's not that fast. Certainly not faster than Straka. On this list, I'd put him in the 40s.

I am biased.. but here's something:

THN:
Skaters/Speed:
1 - Mike Modano
2 - Brett Hedican
3 - Pavel Bure

Glen Sather: "Mike Modano is the fastest player in the NHL, the way he handles the puck at full speed is something beautiful"

Darryl Raugh: "Mike (Modano) is just so exciting, he probably has the fastest wheels in the NHL"

I have more.. but I've always considered Mike the fastest player in the NHL, allong with Sergei Fedorov and Pavel Bure. Yet you have 2 players on your list who haven't showed their skill for more then a combined season.

Jason Blake MUST be on that list. I think he is in the top ten for sure.

Modano = God

About Pavel Bure, the reason I'm not ranking him very high right now is because I've heard a lot about the big problem he's having with his knees right now... I've even heard that he might never be a shadow of what he was even two years ago, and Bobby Orr can tell you that knee injuries can really bring someone down.

Although I might be overrating Bure's injury... but I agree that he'd be one of the fastest without that problem...

Well, the effort is great. I can say that Martin Havlat is faster than a lot of guys on that list, like Sundin for example, and Hossa is too. They both have a gear that Joe Thornton does not if you ask me.

This is how the play went (according to a local paper). Lemieux won a faceoff in the defensive zone and gave it to Koltsov. He dumped it through the neutral zone, and eventually caught up with it.

You know, that's funny... the thing I've heard the most about Beliveau from the critics was that he was too slow

I'm not trying to be biased, but Maxim Afinogenov is one of the fastest players in the league. He was injured for more than half a season last year. IMO and in many Sabre fans opinions, he should be in the top 10 or maybe top 5.

I think Marleau and Sturm should be on this list, they are faster than Selanne if you just talk about pure speed. Selanne said it himself.

Marian Gaborik is the 2nd fastest player on the Wild. Wes Walz is faster. In fact, Walz was one of the top three in the NHL with respect to the super skills competition of a couple years back. Pascal Dupuis is also quite fast, and probably deserves to be on this list.

Kim Johnsson, Simon Gagne & Justin Williams could definately compete to be on this last. I think all 3 are faster than Recchi & Amonte.

i can't speak for a lot of players i don't know aboot, but three not on that list deserve consideration:

tie domi - fastest skater on the leafs. 10 minutes a game, he goes all out.

mike grier - probably the king of negating icing calls. can't stop too well however, ask his shoulders...

rico fata - he has wheels. nothing else. breakout speed and acceleration reminds me of pavel bure back in the day, and no i'm not exaggerating.

all easily faster than scott nichol, someone i've seen skate in person maybe 20-30 times. he does have speed however, just not more than these guys.

a common misconception about sergei samsonov is that he is very fast. the fact is, he's not. he has phenomenal quickness, and may be the best east-west player in the game. but straight-ahead speed he just doesn't possess. keep in mind, i'm certainly not saying he's slow
