If you included every "top ten" player in the top ten, the top ten would be the whole list. Everybody keeps saying, "yeah, this guy is faster than him, he beongs in the top ten." I don't really try to judge speed that much. I think speed is overrated. Players rarely use (or need to use) the speed they have. That is why so many players can be overrated (or underrated). If they often skate fast (maybe because they are caught out of position), then they will seem fast.

BINGO!!!

If you took the 50 fastest straight line skaters in the league and had them race, nobody would be "much faster" than anybody else. They would have top speeds probably within 1 MPH of each other.

What's FAR more important than top speed is

Quickness
Acceleration
Agility
Balance

These are the things that made Pavel Bure great, not his top gear. Yes, when Bure was on a breakaway, he flew. But the defensemen were not going any slower than him, they pretty much went the same speed, but Bure was out ahead because his quickness and acceleration allowed him to reach the puck first, and get to his top speed first.

Even though he has yet to play a game, I *guarantee* that Fredrik Sjostrom is not only faster than most of the players on the list, he also has better acceleration, agility and balance than the vast majority. I would say he is faster than all but maybe 7 or 8 (not thinking anyone specific, just an arbitrary number), but the key is that he can reach full speed in only 3 strides.

I'm sorry but Zednik is one of the fastest player in the league. Bulis must make the list too.

I think it's pretty incredible that Simon Gagné isn't on that list!! This guy is sooo fast! he is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL. No doubt about that!

Kim Jonnsson definitely has to be up there somewhere. Saw a game a few years ago, Doug Weight on a breakaway from the Rangers blueline, had a good 3 steps on everyone, and Kim caught him from behind in the slot... absolutely amazing, Weight has wheels himself.

Also, if you consider him still a player still, Theo Fleury has to be in the top 30 or so.

I agree on Selanne. He has a great 1st step, he can shift from 1st to 3rd gear in a step like Gaborik, but his top end speed is nothing special.

And I would like to add that Jason Blake and Marco Sturm should be top 20.

When Brashear was with the nucks didn't he win the fastest skater competition? Maybe i'm crazy here but if i remember correctly he also had the hardest shot.

Simon Gagne is, but Johnsson and Williams are not in the top 50. Amonte is a much faster skater than either of these two. The good new for the Flyers though, is that Joni Pitkanen looks to be fast enough to at least crack the top 30 of this list, which means our team would have 4 of the fastest skaters in the NHL (Amonte, Kapanen, Gagne, and Pitkanen).

I'd have to say that Brandon Reid is faster than Nazzy as well

The order after 8 is all messed up, first 8 are as close to accurate as you can get. Curious to what he based some of his answers on? Player bias or what. I must say this tho, I am faster than everyone on the list with the exception for Chimera( no truth to that), this is besides the point tho, I have a question for everyone. who are the FASTEST guys who are all-star calliber, meaning past, present, and future????

Its a very tough job listing something like this. So I applaud you for giving it a crack. Just on the hockey I have seen which is mostly Ducks games I will try and show you how hard I find rating the fastest players. I have seen Marco Sturm beat Paul Kariya on a breakaway, Paul Kariya beat Sergei Federov and Sergei Federov blitz Marco Sturm. I've seen Friesen look like a snail compared to Kariya in Anaheim then seen Friesen last year out pace Gaborik easily to beat out an icing call. What I am saying is that I don't think there is that much between 1st and 50th I guess it all depends on different variables. Tough job, well done.

btw 2 years ago I saw this in a magazine and thought that this was a good way of rating speed. I pretty much agree with their picks too.....

CONSTANT SPEED: Modano

TOP SPEED: Bure

ACCELERATION: Kariya

This whole list sucks. Not one Shark is on it and Sturm and Marleau are easily faster than alot of people on it. Including that bum Selanne.

Tyson nash got 2nd in the league in the blues dodge skills competition 2 years ago. And Jamal Mayers has got to be one of the fastest in the league.
