This has to be one of the more shocking events I can ever remember in the NHL. Wow... if the devils can't get that pick back it make it even worse as they're almost certainly a lottery team without him.

The Devils should have forfeited the 29th overall pick in the 2012 draft. Now they have to forfeit their pick in the 2014 draft. They're going to be in a lot of trouble over the next few years.

I will unretire mid-season and join a KHL team... No way he misses the Olympics in his home country.

Absolutely insane.

I can only assume this is his slimy way of wriggling off to the KHL. Though I suppose simply assuming that isn't entirely fair.

This really, really screws the Devils. To think that they built their team around this guy, gave up all of those picks because of his asinine contract and potentially even chased away Parise, in the process.

I'd say there's no doubt he goes to the KHL and plays in the Olympics next season.

By retiring he basically gives up his contract, but the Devils lose his rights.

He can't play for an NHL team, but he can do whatever he wants otherwise.

For sure. In his statement Lou says he's brought it up before. I'd say this was definitely at least in his thoughts for a long time.

Dirty. Absolutely dirty.

He will get it back, tax free, in the KHL. He didn't "leave" anything behind.

So he will retire for a year, come back and sign with the Pens to play with Malkin? then Pens get hated even more?

Yes. They had three chances to forfeit the pick in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and the Devils chose not to do so those years. Now they have no choice but to forfeit their first round pick in 2014.

His biggest salary years were this past season until 2017-2018. Averaging around 11 mil.

I know you're being sarcastic but doesn't this make him ineligible to come back for 4 or 5 years?

They should have forfeited their pick in 2012 instead of drafting a nutcase at 29th overall.
