I understand, it's a possibility but negotiations can just take a while sometimes. Look at how long Subban held out

Who do you guys think Nonis considers a core piece of the team and will not be traded in the near future?

It kind of seems up in the air with many important players unsigned long term, while secondary players are locked up like Bozak/calrkson.

I have a feeling one of Franson or Kadri holds out and doesn't start the season.

The Leafs could live without Franson for 5 - 10 games, but Kadri is a different story. I guess if it takes one of them sitting out a while to sign a reasonable deal it would be worth it.

I think Lupul and JVR are about as untouchable as they get due to their production vs. salary.

Obviously Kessel is currently the most cost effective player on the team right now, but I'm not sure Nonis will like his contract demands. It just seems strange to me that there has been absolutely no effort in re-signing him. Teams have been locking up their core players left, right and centre lately, and not exactly at bargain Prices. This is what you do to keep the guys who you think are huge pieces for the future. I'm not sold that Nonis looks at Kessel, or Phaneuf for that matter, as pieces they want on the team three years from now.

Sign Kadri and let Franson sit at home for a month or two until something opens up. Not having him for the opening of the season is not as big a deal as some people are making it out to be.

Not a fan of Bozak's deal, which we had signed Weiss.

I view kessel and phaneuf as the 2 main peices of the team. If nonis doesn't think so, he better get huge returns on both.

In other news.....we tough as hell baby.

Kadri
Clarkson
Bolland
Orr
Mclaren
Phaneuf
Fraser

Not to mentions guys like

JVR who played a real gritty and strong game against the bruins in playoffs.
Lupul who also plays a physical game hear and there. Tends to trashtalk
Kulemin is quiet but is physical. Can throw some huge hits. (See mcquaid hit)
Cody Franson can play really physical as well.
Mcclements a guy that can stand up for himself if need be
Joe Colborne is a big guy who also played gritty at times during the bruins series.

We also have guys like broll, devane, Biggs and holzer in the marlies.

Those Ron wilson days are def over.

So much this

Clarkson
Bolland
Ranger

Added this offseason, and all of them can play rough and tumble. Ranger isnt a bruiser but he definitely plays physical.

Agreed though, we have a bunch of truly physical and tough guys, some real bruisers to back it up, and some skill guys that also play that way.

I watched a leafs TV special the other day, they literally quote "being tough to play against" as a skill. Then they did a mini segment on who Kulemin is as a player, where he is still finding his game totally, but that he has evolved into a player they love because of how difficult he is to play against if not a traditional tough guy.

So coaching staff and MGMT love Kuley!

of these two players, who's more important to the team? IMO, extending Kessel is more a priority than extending Dion. Of the 2 players who will cost more, and who will be worth the contract they get? With both players having expiring contracts, I see Nonis having a difficult time getting maximum value for either player. Tough decisions ahead, but I have faith in Nonis, he's quietly cleaning up Burke's mess while improving the Leafs, not an easy task to accomplish.

We're close to the cap as it is, and you wanted to spent an extra $700,000 on a guy four years older coming off a wrist injury?

I don't think the wrist injury is much of a concern, and I don't particularly like Tyler Bozak, but I still think this is a case of the grass is greener on the other side. I really don't see it in Stephen Weiss.

The land of misfits adds another member. Though, that name could probably work for the Islanders too, Garth Snow is the king of the dumpster after all

We have cap space to sign both, its not like we are choosing which one to sign.

BTW, "Burkes mess" just took the best in the east game 7 over time.

Scott Gomez for 1 year at 900k is a good signing actually. It has zero risk associated with it since he can play in the minors and not hit the cap at all.

Yeah, I don't really get the Nonis praise/Burke bashing. This was Burkes team, his players, his coach. The only players Nonis brought in were 12/13th forward McLaren and 6/7 dman O'Byrne.

We'll see this season if Nonis made good changes or not.

Cause of two players in our team filed for arb, that means we get another buy out right??? If so, can we use it on Liles or his cap is to much?

I wake up every morning and check my phone to see if Liles has been traded. I'm hoping tomorrow is the day.

The non-compliance buyout window will open on August 2nd, so you might have to sleep a little longer or just pull an all nighter.

I like the guy, but ultimately it's in the best interest of the club to move him one way or another.

Yes we can do a regular buyout due to the factors you mentioned. However the cap hit would last the next 6 years...cap penalty by year..

850 000-2013-14
850 000-2014-15
2 375 000-2015-16
1 250 000-2016-17
1 250 000-2017-18
1 250 000-2018-19

Really the only bad hit is year 3 but ideally we find a taker in trade to avoid this hindrance...

As much as it makes sense... I dont see liles being bought out. I could be proved very wrong in 2 days.

He and phaneuf were the first ones to call and welcome clarkson to the team. Any know if the trade for him and resigning was a burke or nonis move ?

Its tough to say becuase Nonis was here with Burke when Burke was here. I guess to answer your question....liles was acquired when Burke was GM. But im pretty sure Nonis had a say in it too.
