If Nonis really got that 5 year contract extension instead of 3 for his smarts...Then I hope to god he's smart enough to either sign Dion to an extension or trade him if we can't.

You guys need to relax a bit. If we keep Liles it won't be so bad because I'm pretty sure a team would trade for him around the trade deadline easily. That'd be 3.8 free'd up and then Tucker and Armstrongs buyouts come off our cap so that's another 2 mil and then the Retained salary is 500k and then Fraser we will most likely let walk which is 1.2 mil and maybe even Ranger depending on his play and that's another 1 mil. I don't know who this Trevor Smith guy is but capgeek has him on the leafs cap and he'll be let go after next season so that's another 500k. That's roughly 9 mil to resign Kessel, Kadri and Phaneuf at least. Phaneuf will probably stay at same cap most likely and Kessel will get atleast a 2 mil raise and Kadri another 1-2 mil raise. That's our main core and we'd still have about 6 mil to resign guys like Kulemin, Bolland, McClement who will all be making pretty much the same they are now but even if not we'd be able to give them a 1-1.5 mil raise easily. Cap is gonna skyrocket back up to at least 70 mil because of the 6? outdoor games and a full season. We'll be in good shape so relax people. Next years FA class so far is looking really good assuming most of them aren't resigned.

I think its easier for a team to trade for a player in the off-season rather than at the deadline with 2 years left on his deal.

And its a lot easier to say that the guys that are role players like Kulemin and McClement are going to sign on the cheap, when they can easily use comparables around the league.
* For example, Boyd Gordon got 3 mill a season for 3 years and has had similar production to McClement. So what's to say that Jay McClement won't do that? I don't think you can say for sure one way or another that someone won't offer that.

Well if that's true and they really are that important to our team (which I think they are) we could easily give them that. Earlier I said we'd have like 9 mil cap roughly just from getting rid of a few players we don't need and from the buyouts getting off the cap. I forgot to add on the extra cap for the cap raising so if it did go to like 70 we'd have about 15 mil cap space which is more then enough to resign all our guys including Franson.

The cap is going way up next year, the league blew away any post lockout projections, we even set some tv records both here and stateside.

Would not be surprised to see Kulemin moved. I doubt he signs anywhere near his current contract, and if he's locked on the 3rd. line it makes no sense for him to re-sign in Toronto.

Problem is that the Leafs severely lack NHL quality bottom 6 wingers at the moment.

McClement-Bolland-_______
McLaren-Colborne-Orr

You're pretty much guaranteeing that you'll get 0 goals from your bottom 6. Sucks for Dave Bolland.

I think they are going to and want a healthy competition for that spot as they did last year...

One of the marlies are going to battle hard for that spot and that leads to a competitive camp!

Ashton, D'amigo, Ryan, Ross and Biggs will all be eying that spot.

If none are ready...

Kulemin - Bolland - McClement
McLaren - Colborne - Orr

aint bad

The poster you're referencing is talking about what our bottom 6 would look like IF Kulemin was moved... So having Kulemin in your line-up if he was moved doesn't make much sense

If we moved Kulemin (and he's one of the players I'd want to move the least), our bottom 6 could look like one of these next year:

D'amigo - Bolland - Ashton
McLaren - McClement - Orr

or

Ashton/D'amigo - Bolland - McClement
Ashton/D'amigo - Colborne - Orr

When you look at the quality of NHL wingers that are still UFAs at this point of the year, I feel confident in essentially guaranteeing that that won't be our bottom 6 going into the 2014 season.

Personally though I'd prefer we keep Kulemin, but if he wants more than $3M it gets difficult.

I think they will go with Kulemin and not trade him unless A: He is part of a package for another player or B: we are out of it and we move him at the TD.

I think they might let him walk if we are contending for a PO spot and we need him.

What exactly would indicate to Kulemin (or his agent) that he should be paid as a top 6 winger? His 30 goal season is a distant memory and on most nights he's a black hole on offense. Defensive specialists don't get paid that much, and that's exactly what Kulemin has become. And we overrate his game in his own zone quite a bit here.

I really feel like Kulemin will leave next year. I like the guy but it won't be the end of the world if we can re-sign Bolland and McClement. I want those guys to be staples of our 3rd line similar to Boston's Kelly-Peverley connection until this year.

I believe both were signed to One Year deals.

Bodie is marrying Tim Leiweke's daugther IIRC and probably is signed for Marlies depth to allow his daugther to begin their life in Toronto along with the rest of the Leiweke family.

Smith will be a depth player for the bottom 6 in case of injury but is more than likely behind a few players in terms of call up list, Potential Marlies Captain IMO.

I'm guessing our new AHL vet and AHL tough guy. I hope we don't rely heavily on AHL vets anymore though. Maybe 2 or 3 in the lineup. I don't want an entire 1A or 1B line with vets like a usual Eakins lineup. Hopefully that's where Spott makes changes. If any team should 'play the kids', it should be the Marlies.

To another point, a 3rd line of Mclement - Bolland - Kulemin will be a great shut down line. It would get a lot of time from Carlyle and take most defensive zone face offs.

JVR - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson
Mclement - Bolland - Kulemin
Orr - Colborne - McLaren

If/when Colborne starts to light it up a little more he can steal the odd shift off Clarkson and bump the lines a little.

Lupul - Kadri - Colborne
Clarkson - Bolland - Kulemin
Orr - Mclement - Mclaren

RC does like to shuffle the lines. I could see the first line up as his pencilled in starting rotation.

You mean like the Devils trading for a seventh round pick so they could draft Brodeur's kid? Is it your money? What do you care? Talk about exaggeration.

i care when he takes up a roster spot and is a bum... I care about the message it sends to other teams... Nonis is a pawn, Burke would have never done that and IMO thats the real reason he was fired.

The guy is a goon! In a system that utilizes them. You don't see that? If he wasn't signed, we'd have another there instead. Why not sign the bosses son in law. It's not like he doesn't have NHL experience.

I hope nonis gets a superstar center from the AHL to play for the marlies. We need a great player to add to our top 6 and give guys like biggs confidence.

Biggs-Superstar-Ashton
Leivo-Mckegg-Ross

Still wouldnt be a great top 6 but at least the marlies would have a chance of scoring 2+ goals a game. Otherwise we will be the AHL version of nashville.

Then bodie and smith can join our bottom six with guys like broll, ryan, devane, creszensi, carrick

I think Trevor Smith is the superstar AHL center you're looking for.

He has scored 20 or more goals every year he's been in the AHL and he even scored well above a PPG in 2011-2012. (69 pts in 64 gms)

Rofl Chad Larose is missing apparently. Dude disappeared at the end of the season and no team can get a hold of him. He hasnt been picking up his phone and not replying to text messages. Not that its funny or anything.

No wonder he hasnt been signed yet. Dude is a serviceable player and im pretty sure he would have ben signed by now

I read that but it seems to be one article picked up by multiple sources so the info is lacking but it never says anything about contacting the guy's agent. I would assume he has one but the articles I've read just say they have text him and tried to call him.
