I don't see Schenn as being much better than Fraser

He was progressing quite well for the first two to three years, so doesn't really make sense to say he was ruined by being brought to the NHL too quickly. It was after he got a bigger contract and started trying to do too much that he backslid.

He played best when paired with Kaberle, in Tomas' still-fairly-good days. As a stay at home guy, makes sense to pair him with a mobile PMD - might have made a good tandem with Rielly or Gardiner.

I liked the guy. Too bad so many "Leaf fans" have to hate on our own players so much.

Do you think that RC is some kind of miracle worker? He wouldn't be that much better than Fraser to be honest. Hey, not every 5th overall pick is going to pan out exactly how we want.

We had to wait too long to see a strong game from Luke Schenn. Was too often a scratch

Kind of cool how JVR pulled the same stunt on Schenn himself...

He would have been Fraser under Carlyle. Nobody ruined Luke, Wilson wasn't the problem, Luke is just a average D man, the Foote comparisons are laughable.

Schenn barely progressed with the Leafs. At most you can say his offensive zone play improved slightly the year before he was traded. His skating never seemed to get any better. He still has time to improve it, though - Franson seemed to work pretty hard on his skating and playmaking last season.

A Schenn -- Aulie shutdown pairing would have strived under a Carlyle system, and Randy would have loved to have such big physical defense first players at his disposal.

There would have been no need to have Mike Kostka as a regular if you had better players available.

Good point... Totally forgot about Aulie, who also plays Carlyle's brand of hockey. Schenn-Rielly/Aulie-Gards could've been a pretty sweet top 4 if everything panned out

Anyways, my question is how good do you think Luke schenn could have been?

I think he couldve been a very good #2 stay at home dman (and think he still will be one day).
Who cares, he wouldn`t be as good as JVR under Carlyle so whats the point of discussing this. He`s gone, we don`t miss him and we got something good for him. This is like having a thread to debate how good Beauchemin would have been under Carlyle, or how good Keith Aulie or Joey Crabb. Who cares.

Strived to be what? One of the slower pairings in the League?

A coach who's won a Norris trophy and preaches the importance of defense first could've potentially turned schenns career around and helped him reach his pre-draft potential? Idk, just speculating - slow day at work

Being coached by Carlyle doesn't mean they are going to be twice as good if we had kept them

Philly never would have traded Schenn for JVR if it wasn't for the brother factor.
We won the trade...move on

I think the real question should be, what if we didn't have JVR last season?

Much better than he did under Wlson, that's for sure. From what I read, Luke's mobility has improved in Philly and he hasn't been half bad, so I think both teams got something they wanted and that's kind of the point of trading: to deal positions of strength for positions of weakness and both teams did just that. Given that both players are young this is one of those trades that takes a while before a conclusion can be drawn and we are ahead right now.

I feel like Schenn would probably have played better under Carlyle given the teams playing style and how much he demands out of his players. But I would still rather have JVR and he has a much better chance of reaching his ceiling than Schenn does IMO. The trade instantly made our top six more dynamic and dangerous and I feel we have other options who have filled Schenns spot adequately or even outperformed him. That being said Schenn is still quite young and has a good number of years to reach his potential.
