Maple Leafs sign G Christopher Gibson (ELC)

49th overall pick in the 2011 NHL draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

Highly touted goalie prospect from a couple years ago.

Gibson was expected to go in the 1st/2nd round coming out of Finland and the QMJHL.

Must have impressed at development camp .. Love the signing, potential to get a late bloomer who hadn't lived up to his potential yet

Gibson - MacIntyre - Sparks should give the Marlies some solid 'tending

Great pickup. No risk, high reward.

Not sure why they signed MacIntyre, unless they put Sparks or Gibson in the ECHL

Sparks and Gibson aren't ready to be the starter in the AHL and if one of Bernier or Reimer go down to injury MacIntyre is a much better option to bring up.

When I saw that the Lefs signed goalie Gibson to an ELC, I thought for a second we traded for John Gibson (Ducks über goalie prospect). Oh well, never hurts to have as much depth as possible in goal. Gotta think this pushes Sparks to the ECHL or Gibson is just left there.

Good signing. Never hurts to have more goalie prospects.

IIRC Rynnas signed in Europe (he was a FA) and Owuya wasn't resigned either ... Either couldn't really cut it overseas here

As mentioned above, nothing wrong with having goalie prospects .. Leafs are lacking that, only having Bibeau in the Junior ranks now ... Glad to see Sparks graduate, but Gibson gives another youngster for the system

What happened with this? is he a FA because he wasn't given an ELC in 2 years or something? either way i'll take it as he was a 2nd rounder only 2 years ago. Free prospect I guess

The signing of MacIntyre and Gibson, along with the drafting of Bibeau adds to an area where our prospect pool was pretty shallow. Smart moves by Nonis.

Awesome signing, he's going to be a good one, first saw him in the WJHC for Finland when he came in after they were getting destroyed by either the Americans or Canadians. Either way was very impressive.

Nice. Went 49th overall because LA saw talent. Goalies are later to develop so who knows what we will end up, but it cost us nothing so it's all good even if he flops

It says he went un-signed by the Kings and was going to re-enter the draft but signed with us..how the hell does a 2nd round pick not get signed! wow this is a strange but awesome news for the Leafs.

Hextall said the issue was contract limit, you can only have 50 contracts signed and they were pushing the limit so they had to let him go.

He also regressed pretty hard from his draft year.

They signed Mac before they invited Gibby to camp (I think). Anyway, it makes for good form to have a vet to start and the rooks to spell him off.

I said a hip-hop-hibbie the hibbie to the hip hip hoppa you don't stop the pucka, now suckaz back in Stockholm cause he felt all alone. So the Leafs signed the finnish Gibby.

Maybe he saw the logjam in the crease and felt uninspired.

The Kings had holes in their system for goalies, spent a 2nd rounder on a guy they thought was the best goalie in the draft, yet after two years decided he wasn't worth the entry level contract. He's clearly talented but didn't seem to improve at all after being drafted and posted some pretty mediocre numbers.

Still, not a bad guy to pick up for nothing if you have plenty of contract slots available.
