Maple Leafs sign G Christopher Gibson (ELC)

Former 2nd round pick (2011) of the LA Kings.

He'll likely be the #3 goalie with the Marlies and a #1 goalie in the ECHL.

Gibson attended the Maple Leafs prospect camp last week.

By all accounts he's fairly terrible, but you never know...

I saw Gibson, goalie, drafted by California team and got excited for Leafs fans...then came here to see it was not John.

His stats are more a product of a terrible team than terrible play. .902 %SV isn't supposed to give >3.00 GAA.

We'll see how it goes.

He was ranked not far behind John Gibson at the 2011 draft...I have heard that he's looking like a bust actually but isn't it premature?

I would say its hard to call any 2011 pick a bust, especially a goalie.

I know Gibson wasn't THAT great in the Q, buy why exactly the Kings declined signing him?

True. Goalies are typical late bloomers. With seasoning and development...Gibson could easily back up one of Reimer/Bernier or become a trading chip for the Leafs in the future.

He must have impressed the Leafs at the development camp.

You answered your own question. The Kings were afraid of the huge amount of goals he let in and decided he wasn't worth a contract.

Well he's pretty far down the depth chart but a good depth signing.

He had a great stretch during the season with ridiculous numbers. Also player of the week I believe.

Than he let in a lot of goals at the end.

Fine with the signing, he'll probably back-up Sparks in the AHL the year after next if MacIntyre walks. We needed goalies with Owuya and Rynnas busting.

At 20? Way to early to tell. And even if he is... Toronto has lots of money, and it means little for them to take a chance on 1 kid.

This. I was pissed with the pick immediately. He was just grossly overrated. And I really don't see an NHL future for him.

Well since Nonis likes to trade 2nds they should get all the extra prospects they can.

Not sure about an NHL future but you never know. Management must have saw something they liked to offer him a contract. Depth never hurts.

I like that Nonis signed him. free wallet.

what I don't understand is why Calgary didn't take a chance on him? could've given him a shot IMO. Their goalie depth isn't that great tbh...
