what I don't understand is why Calgary didn't take a chance on him? could've given him a shot IMO. Their goalie depth isn't that great tbh...
I'd argue that the depth is there, the only thing missing in Calgary's goaltending stable is a surefire starter. Ramo/Berra/MacDonald/Ortio/Brossoit is a solid group if someone steps up and takes the reigns.

I never liked him much, plus there was a commitment to the military or something.

Kinda OT but is Gibson traditionally a Finnish name?

This is just me, but isn't Jon Gilles the most promising of the bunch?

Between Mark Owuya and Christopher Gibson, the Leafs seem to have cornered the market on Scandinavian born biracial goaltenders.

Also, this is the fourth Chicoutimi Sagueneens goaltending product the Leafs have held in their possession. Felix Potvin, Eric Fichaud and Jimmy Waite being the previous.

Calgary already has their hands full in terms of project goalies, in Ramo and Berra..

He looked like garbage at our camps, but this. Why give up on our highest pick in that draft so soon? The answer is above.

If so, wtf.

why is every signing declared either terrible or overpaid by fans from other teams?

Gibson has potential and its just a regular signing...its neither good or bad but good for toronto for being active

thats it...relax people...god..

It's not a signing that I'm jumping up and down in glee over, but it's not one I'm mad at either. Young goalie for free? Sure, why not.

His father's a British martial arts instructor. Met the mother in Finland, I believe.

Pretty much. It's just a depth organizational move.

I was hoping the Leafs would have signed up Joachim Eriksson, whom they were rumored to be after a year ago, but he went to Vancouver...

You're right, I knew something was wrong with my list, it was way more impressive looking in my head lol. But that just further proves my point that there's absolutely nothing wrong with the Flames depth in goal.

I liked Chris in his draft year anyway, picked him in my FHL. Haven't paid much attention to him since, but he was fairly rated as a 2nd round-ish goalie in his draft. It's early in goalie years to declare him a bust. He has been a "disappointment", obviously, but if he needed some extra motivation, this whole process has to do it. I'd rather if the Habs had signed him than re-signed Mayer, for example. At least I *know* by now that Mayer isn't going anywhere.

I feel like Kelly Hrudey's blue bandana would look great with the Flames jerseys.

Meh, the compulsory military service is a total joke for athletes.

1/6 army time
5/6 hockey time

Not that it isn't a joke for the Average Joe either, it's a grown up boys kindergarten really.

I stated before that he was the second coming of Dan "Beachball" Cloutier... So far he hasn't disappointed...

Wasn't John Gibson drafted with the Leafs 2nd round pick?

Don't remember.
