Garon will play approximately 20 matches this season

(in french)

Saturday September 27, 2003 - (RDS) - Mathieu Garon was in front of the net of Tricolour Friday evening against Bruins of Boston. Garon should play a score of matches (20) since the direction of the Canadian let know that José Theodore was going to play between 55 and 60 games this season.

For the first time of his career, Mathieu Garon will begins a season as a substitute goaltender. At 25 years, he just played 24 matches in the National League and the important one for him is to take experiment.

"I was often goaltender # 1 in my career, but here I proved that I could be a good goaltender # 2. When the team called upon my services I performed well ", Garon indicates.

Mathieu Garon will know a good career in the National League, according to Roland Melanson. His presence is reassuring and moreover, he can be used as "monnaie d'échange" (for trade). But Garon is not the kind of athlete who likes the controversy. This is why he wants that his performances force the hand of the Canadiens. And thereafter one will see...

"We should not be in a hurry. José waited a few years before being # 1 goaltender. It is the first time that I begin the year in Montreal as goaltender # 2 then I still do not think of the post of first goaltender ", adds Mathieu Garon.

"We wanted that the goaltenders have a beautiful relation, a little like Theodore and Hackett in the past. The competition is healthy for the athletes and we want to develop a competition between José and Mathieu ", tells Roland Melanson.

During this time, José Theodore continues his preparation and already the Canadiens established a plan of match for his goaltenders this season.

"When the team made the series two years ago, José had played 67 matches during the season, which is much. We should give him between 55 and 60 starts. Mathieu will be able to see action ", adds the coach of the goaltenders.

Even if the Canadiens dispute four matches in five evenings, it is already assured that Mathieu Garon and José Theodore will share the net. That will be the case for the preparatory matches which he remains to play.

Garon was very impressive at the Bruins game. He showed maturity and poise out there, and I would like him to see alot of ice during the season. I hope more than 20 games anyway
