No, there were 3 guys in our system that didnt come to the camp. One was taking summer classes and working with his college incoming freshmen players (Velischuk maybe?) Zlobin was one of the 3 missing.

Probably is our most underrated prospect actually. Another guy I've seen firsthand quite a bit. Ton of skill. Probably a boom-or-bust guy.

Archibald was the one working with his college incoming freshmen.

I'm kind of surprised there are 51 votes for Olli and 6 for Harrington. For the last year plus, I've seen lots of posts raving that Harrington will soon be in the NHL, displacing a veteran, etc. etc. Now he's not even close to being ranked by the cognoscenti as the Pens' top prospect? I can't say either way, as I've only seen him play a few times (and frankly didn't see what all the raving was about), but it's just interesting how quickly his star seems to have faded here.

his star didn't fade. I think most of us are putting more weight on upside instead of NHL readiness.

Yeah... it's a balancing act, sorta.

Harrington is certainly the most ready of the three. Maatta and Pouliot have higher all around ceilings with both having (IMO, of course) their own chance of actually attaining it. I happen to think Olli's chances are a bit better of fulling reaching his top end.

People get carried away with prospects, and often think they can play well before Pens management might. And we have a couple guys drafted a lot higher with more skills right now too.

Harrington should be a good player for us starting in oh, about 2015.

Voted Maatta but I want to change my vote to Pouliot...I think Maatta is more of a sure-thing but Pouliot has the greater potential.

I'd say he at least gets the Despres treatment in 2014.

People on the site err towards best-case scenarios, and Maatta's the most well-rounded of our high-end defense prospects (Harrington's shutdown, Pouliot's offensive), so he gets the benefit of the doubt.

How is everyone feeling a year after the Pouliot draft pick? There was quite an uproar when he was drafted.

Would you still rather have had Forsberg drafted at that pick (as an example)?

Edit: add Samuelson. Surprised he's not on the list.

I guess this can of worms is gonna be opened again.

Jury's still out on Forsberg. I'm personally fine with Pouliot over Forsberg. The one player I wanted then and now still over Pouliot was Trouba.

It really was just an underwhelming draft for forwards (wingers especially), and I'm pretty pleased with Pouliot's development thus far.

Three of the top four graduated last year, or are no longer in our system. Most first rounders take at least a couple years to make the show, let alone later picks. I don't find that scary, really.

However, I do wish this team was more active in signing college free agents, like Detroit and Toronto (at less under Burke) have been of late.

Seriously thought the only obvious thing about any of this is, none of our forwards even crack the Top 5.

Pouliot
Maatta
Harrington
Dumoulin
Jarry
Harztell

are all more valuable prospects than all of the F, and the D among them are more likely than any two F prospects put together, to make positive contributions to this team in the next 2-3 years.

Other than passing time I truly do not understand the purpose of polls like these. Everyone knows our best prospects are D prospects and by not a small margin, followed by the goalies. Our F prospects don't even qualify as "average" in terms of the probability than any has a lasting impact on the team. It COULD happen but it's so far-fetched right now that it's pointless to even think about it for a couple years.

I still would've preferred Grigorenko or Forsberg. I think they're better assets that would've better addressed our pipeline deficiencies.

But Pouliot's acquitted himself well since the draft.

Something fun to pass the time during the offseason. Every once in a while, a worthwhile debate about some lesser-known prospects will spring up, which will end up enlightening someone else, and a kitten will get its wings, or something, and it will have all been worth it.

But yeah, in general, it's just something to do. Just like *insert person of choice to make this joke inappropriate* is.

Yah. I like learning about new prospects... the problem is it's hard to learn anything of value about them in most threads like these because they're filled with guesswork. I should probably visit the perpetual prospects discussion thread more. Would probably find some good stuff in there from WBS fans, CHL fans, etc.

It is a long and painful summer though. At least the playoffs started and ended late, dropping us right into draft week, then FA week etc. Now the dog days. Or should I say... the panda days. Sleep pandas, sleep. Soon you will come out of hibernation and awake to hockey season.
