Surprised to see Monahan out of their top 10.

Me to. I think there reasoning was they have a similar player in Sean Couturier and were targeting a defenseman as that was there biggest need. According to that list I think they went by needs instead of the usual BPA.

In the video, Holmgren seems to disagree with Monahan being moved down that low. They originally had him at #6.

Your link is broken, I don't know how to copy links from the nhl videoplayer but just go here: http://video.flyers.nhl.com/videocenter/ and select "Off The Ice" and then "Flight Plan: Episode 1" to watch the video

It's gotta be because they have Couts....and Monahan and Couturier are similar players.

If you look past the top 5, they sure seem to favor need over position.

What's interesting to me is that they've got Zadorov over both Nurse and Risto.

They have Monahan higher at the start and talk themselves down on him.

Fascinating.

Some thoughts:

- We haven't seen much of Kevin Devine's process, but I am more impressed by him than by the Flyer's guy.

- Flyers should have taken the more skill Dman (Morrissey or Mueller). But then what do I know (or won't know for 10 years anyway).

- I'm kind of amazed how fluid their 1st round board is just a few days before the draft.

- Is that Chris Pronger?

Morin and Mueller being their #2 and #3 D-men ahead of Nurse/Risto/Zadorov is just a tad absurd.

I haven't watched the video, but he was definitely at the draft and got interviewed during the later rounds.

Yes it was, probably were asking him for advice into who they should draft based on there needs are a younger version of him.

We won't know for years, but personally I had:
Ristolainen
Morin
Zadorov
Mueller
Morrissey
Nurse

Not necessarily. Everyone has their own board. Homogenious ranking lists don't leave a lot of room for the unique nature of each team's board.

Agreed. I was not impressed at all by their process, or what they showed of it. They seemed very unsure of themselves and just kind of winging it.

I'm just shocked Holmgren wasn't in the room for this.

I can forgive the Morin over Monahan ranking only because they had no chance of getting Monahan at the 11 spot. The whole video reminded me of a couple chapters in "Moneyball" where the scouts would fall in love players for the wrong reason. Something tells me a lot of those older scouts use the "eye test" when judging a player.

Yeah, seemed to me that they fell in love with 6'8" and "he hits". Maybe trying too hard to replace Chris Pronger instead of identifying BPA. Didn't hear much about: skill, hockey IQ, and character.

Could anyone here imagine the Sabres staff showing up for a meeting in T-shirts and sandals? Business casual or team-oriented track suits seem to be the norm.

i just cant imagine feeling all good and fuzzy inside if i was a flyer fan, they seemed generally clueless and were grasping at straws, and then on top of that Holmgren shows up at the tail end, questions everything and they end up sticking with their imo crooked board. i would love to watch episode 2 before i comment further. It makes me feel good to see how knowledgeable the Sabres staff is and how organized and disciplined they were.

It kinda sucks that for once a team is willing to give us a bit of a real behind the scenes look, and then they end up looking like a bunch of amateurs . Because I'd actually like to see more of that stuff, but as you can see sadly honesty can end up hurting a franchises image more than it helps...

I also don't think that it's fair to compare the qualities of Devines work to the work of the Flyers guy just based on this material. Looks like the Flyers guy just isn't much of a media person or a master of words, that doesn't mean that he isn't a good scout though. And the videos we got from the Sabres after ther Draft were much more polished, the Flyers one is pretty raw and doesn't try too hard to make them look good - which is why I think that theirs actually even was a little more interesting

This isn't meant as a knock on Devine or the Sabres btw, as I also think that they have done some great work in the scouting/drafting department lately and look to very professional in general.

In regards to what? Zadorov falling to us? I think Morin is actually the safer pick of the two. The Flyers scouting is usually pretty in touch when it comes to the Q and I think it was a good pick. What I didn't like was their staffs seeming agenda to make every D prospect ranked higher and higher to fit an organizational need and I think that is exactly what Holmgren was alluding to at the end.

I dont question them picking Morin....Just a tad surprised that they had Morin and someone else ahead of risto, Nurse, and Zadarov.

If I recall they had him at 6 on their board...I could see him being in that 9-13 range as many others had him.

One thing I meant to do but never did it......If anyone knows if this was done let me know....I saw someone had posted links to around 25-30 various draft forecast boards In doing some analysis I wonder if they pooled all those forecast together where would everyone lie based on avg , high spot, low spot and where they actually went.

In those various lists I recall seeing Zadorov having one of the widest spreads of any player...some had him as a top 4 talent while others had him being picked in the 20s.
