I think the All Star break will be good for Hurdle. Who is looking a bit unhappy, and tired at this point. (watching his presser now)

As our pathetic offense is probably wearing on him.

Enjoyed the game. I thought the Mets did a great job pitching around some players. It was kind of interesting to watch. Great outcome. Would LOVE to sweep them somehow and land 21 games above .500. That would be so damn sweet.

It's very doable to sweep Mets. Their offense is mediocre at best.

Good thing Harvey won't pitch in this series.

If we sweep this series.. we'll have as many wins at the ASG break as we had in the entire 2010 season.

I was driving home and listening on the radio when Mercer knocked in the winning run, wish I could have seen it.

Gotta say I heartily disagreed with wasting an out with Tabata bunting Marte over to 3rd in the 9th. Jose's been tearing it up since he got back and Marte scores on almost any base hit. Also may have encouraged them to pitch to Cutch if it came to that.

All's well that ends well I guess.

Having Tabata bunt in that situation is an example of how Hurdle sometimes hurts the team. There is no excuse for that.

Definitely not a good time to bunt but it did set up the opportunity to have your cleanup hit to get a sac fly. Too bad he can't hit a lefty to save his life.

I thought it was a perfect time to bunt. No outs, put him one bag away....wild pitch, sac fly, shallow single, etc. would have scored him.

If tabata gets out and marte is still on second, it eliminates a ton of ways for him to score.

There's an argument to be had for and against that bunt beyond the 20/20 hindsight.

For
- In most situations that's the right thing to do...a runner at 3rd with 1 out can score on way more plays than a runner at 2nd can.
- Tabata is one of few guys on the team who can actually bunt properly, and he laid down a perfect bunt.
- Marte at third, one out, and McCutchen due up with Alvarez on deck? Yeah, I like those odds.

Against
- Circumstantial awareness...the bunt may have been the right thing to do at the time, but some forethought would have made it clear that McCutchen was never going to be batted to and a lefty was warming up in the bullpen. Alvarez is both a double-play and a strikeout candidate, the odds of both magnified against lefties.
- It is just giving up an out and an essential at bat. I would say if Tabata doesn't bunt him over then McCutchen would likely get to bat, but with how liberally the Mets were intentionally walking guys I don't think Cutch bats regardless, even if Tabata walks.

That wasn't an egregious WTF type moment that many of his bunts are, but it was obvious that the end result was going to be Alvarez up in a bad situation for him. I don't think anyone could have expected the Mets to switch pitchers twice after that initial one, though. Four pitchers in an inning is pretty absurd. The good thing is that we had Gaby on the bench to null the last one, but the bad thing is that with two outs it was going to take a base hit to win the game and the odds are always going to be against the batter there, no matter what the split is.

I'm surprised more teams don't utilize the strategic IBB like the Mets did last night. It happens, but not with that sort of regularity. The Mets were confident none of our periphery players were going to come up with a second big hit of an inning, so they just took our star players out of the equation with IBBs. It was nice to see Mercer being the one to get the hit, but it took three innings of that to actually bring a run across when we were getting guys on base to start the inning no problem.

Of course the Mets use of the IBBs could have easily blown up on them and them using 4 relievers in a single inning completely ****ed them over if this game made it to the 11th, which it did, meaning they had a kid making his Major League debut on the road in the bottom of the 11th, so neither manager gets out of this scot-free. There was also the fairly questionable decision to lift Hefner when he was cruising through the Pirates like it was nothing because he'd pitched 7 innings...but only 78 pitches.

Locke scratched for tomorrow and the ASG :/ They say it's nothing serious and he'll be back after the break but I feel like they say that about everyone who ends up on the DL.

Pirates games are usually so prompt with the starting time. With the FOX broadcast, ughhh.......7:20 first pitch.

Who is the color guy?? Awful voice for a broadcaster. Looking for Pirates on the radio, but I don't think they are on.

EDIT: Nice, the crowd is into it early. Hopefully the offense will give them something to cheer about.

That sucks for him...missing what will likely be his only all-star game. Unless he somehow becomes an ace outta nowhere.

Cole.

So this way you keep Cole happy and get Locke some rest. Probably not a bad thing for the team.

John Perotto was on the FAN today. Said that a good target for the Pirates would be Aoki from the Brewers. Bat him leadoff. Move Marte down a bit.

What do you guys think?
