St. Louis re-signs Jake Allen [2 years/$800,000 AAV/2-way 1st year, 1-way 2nd]

per Andy Strickland

#stlblues nearing deal with goaltender Jake Allen...likely two-yr deal with one-way money in second year. Could get done today #NHL
I'm a little surprised he's not able to get a 1-way deal in both years after how well he played this past year, but it's a pretty soft goalie market.
EDIT: Done deal

I'm not surprised the first year would be two way. It looks like we're going to be rolling with Halak/Elliott again. If we had moved one of them I think Allen would have gotten one way for sure.

good deal. I guess we can expect Elliot or Halak to be traded within the next year

They will both be UFA at the end of the season, one will likely return and the other gone. The one who stays will most likely depend on how they perform this year.

I think neither stay unless they intend to be backups/1a1b. Jake is the real deal and this one last year of development should leave him ready to carry the load.

Its possible but Id be surprised if they just give Allen the starting job, they would probably want to run a tandem that first year to see how he adjusts, and if Allen steps up and steals the job so be it.

Not at all surprised at how this deal is structured. Any deal involving Halak or Elliott clearly didn't work out and so they will be the tandem again this season and next year when likely both are gone, Jake will be right there to step in as the backup at the very least.

How are they fitting in Pietrangelo, if Halak and Elliott are both staying on the roster?

Trading Perron. They still have around $9M in cap space.

I believe they will do so by utilizing the near $8.8M in cap space they have remaining. Even at a 7M cap hit they still have almost $2M to use on Paajarvi, which will be more than enough.

Smart move. Halak will probably be injured multiple times this season.

It's a good deal. You can't give Allen a one-way yet with Halak and Elliott both on the roster. I'm sure we tried to move one of them but didn't have any luck. So we'll just go with that duo again, and Allen should be fine spending some time in the AHL for just one more season. Then next year he should be ready for the NHL full-time, because there's no way both Halak and Elliott will be returning at the start of the 2014 season.

Two way contract this year (750k/125k), one way next year (850k).

This is outstanding value.

GMs seem to be getting really good deals on their arbitration-ineligible RFA's this year.

Unless something significant happens this season, then the plan will be for Allen to be the back up in 2014/15.

Aucoin will be in the AHL, so we have $9.45m in cap space for Pietrangelo and Pääjärvi.
