Just because he plays a pressure game, it does not mean he does not stress defence.

If you want an offensive coach, watch Ron Wilson's teams. Deboer couldn't be any more a polar opposite than Ron Wilson.

Grabo is not a guy that does well with structure, he needs to free wheel. He would be best off finding a team that plays an up tempo trade chances system where he can use his speed and limited hockey sense.
when someone calls someone a defensive coach, to me, it means that they preach sitting back and sending only 1 man in. the Devils do not do that. they play a possession style game that is heavily reliant on the forecheck.

I don't think a defensive coach tells his defensemen to pinch on 95% of opportunities. I would think a defensive coach would tell his point men not to pinch unless they were sure they wouldn't get beat.

The Devils' defense play a very risky game in the offensive zone. They happen to be very apt defensively - as they allowed fewer shots than any other team in the league last season. But in my opinion they are way too aggressive in the offensive zone to be called a defensive team.

I see a lot of Deboer in the way Claude Julien coaches guys.

Claude Julien coached teams are one of the best at taking "time and space" away from their opponents.

They also like to pinch their D at the blueline to keep the cycle going, often "hemming" the opposing teams in their own zone.

Whatever the term of style of hockey we want to call this, it leads to a good defensive goals against record.

Pat Burns was my favorite coach of alltime, in many ways he coached in this manner. Very strong puck pressure teams, that were positionally flawless, hard working blue collar hockey. He was the pioneer of defensive hockey, by not trapping but by what these coaches incorporate into their game.

I know as a Leafs fan, the 2 years he coached when the Leafs went to the final 4 were the most exciting teams in the 40 years I have been watching hockey. Not to be confused with boring trap hockey, Leafs played an entertaining style under Burns. Hard nosed blue collar hockey, that was the hallmark of a well coached team.

Those teams were not a trap team, but played a dogged puck pressure style that was one of the better defensive teams in the NHL those 2 years.

Monahan may not be ready. Even if he is, they are still very thin at Center.

Grabovski, if he is willing to take a reasonable offer, would be a strong addition for them. He is not a #1 Center, but he might be one of their best options for next few years.
Maybe... but the Flames currently have 4 centres not counting Monahan - Backlund, Stajan, Knight and Jones. If Cammy plays centre then that's 5.

They'll likely try Backlund as their 1 this year. Stajan was solid last year. Grabovski would be an upgrade, but not a huge one. And the Flames aren't really going all-out this year regardless, so I don't think they'd go after him all that hard.

Jones fell out of favour with the coaching staff for some mysterious reason we only had two natural centres in Backs and Stajan, but he spent most of the year in the minors. Even after we had injuries and after the moves made at the deadline. I'm guessing he's almost done with the big club.

Getting Grabovski would allow us to let Monahan go back to junior
and, hopefully dominate. Have a good WJC and contine to develop his offensive game.

Then, Grabo, Backs and Stajan can have healthy competition for top 6 minutes, we can see what we have in Knight without needing him to be anything else than a solid 4th liner. Hopefully trade Stajan at the deadline and use filler from the Heat for the rest of the season.

Bring in Monahan next year and have him take Stajans spot in the competition.

To bad the Jets aren't in, he'd be a good fit as our 2C. Guess we're rolling the dice with Jokinen...

Sounds good to me looked like he was skating in sand last year, will miss his shot and miss him for sure but we got plenty of capable forwards that can play both ends of the ice not just one..

Lol with proper rest.. He can still score with the best of them.. He has never been a good defensive player.. Lot of people want him to retire.. He reads these boards.. just a heads up.. and lot of his motivation comes from the fans..

Yea, I'm sure he's going to base his decision to retire from the NHL on some anonymous message board posters.

We may be anonymous but in the end. He knows we are the fans.. He himself said it.. Fans give him motivation to play. Last year he was gassed because of the shortened season..and lets be honest.. wasnt playing that well. Its all about if he can get top 6 minutes..and by the looks of it.. He probably wont..Btw.. I didnt say hes going to base his decision on what we say. Thats ridiculous.. Its based on his family and what the coach can offer him..

I look forward to whichever team signs Grabo as their shut down forward.

Wait...that's his role right?

I'm for Teemu coming back, but next year's schedule will be just about as compact as last year's when you consider the 3 week break for the Olympics. That alone could affect his decision.

Great forward depth, which is needed since there aren't any "stars" so to speak past the first line. I would think Etem starts in the AHL if that happens though, as Beleskey is definitely expected to be in the lineup every night.

Defense still has me very uneasy, though

The similarities are both are strong puck possession players. That's about it.
The intangibles argument right when you need it

7 years is ridiculous for a black hole with ground zero hockey IQ, terrible skating skills that brings really really nothing special defensively.

At least Grabo MAY take some top 6 minutes, Clarkson clearly cannot, We'll talk about this before Christmas, you'll see.

And Pete Deboer is a puck possession aggressive forechecking coach. Defense or offense doesn't make sense with his system. Basically the more time you spend in the opposite zone, the better it will be, especially in the long term. That's it.
