Still Regarding Selanne (he signed! woooooooooo!)

http://translate.google.com/translat...584757117.html
Basicaly says.. he is willing to take a lessor role but if he plays better than youngster than he deserves more minutes.. hes been training harder this summer..(which tells me he wants to come back) He was waiting on the coaches word regarding his role ( BB told him he would have to earn top 6 minutes) Asked if he would join another team..(said it really hasn't crossed his mind but always an option) It comes down to this.

1. His ice time
2. His Role
3. Lastly Money

Teemu absolutely should not retire if he is willing to work for a top 6 role. If not, he can play bottom 6 minutes and get PP time. Although, it would be sort of a shame to see him play another year just to play bottom 6 minutes. I think he is at a juncture where he wants to play more, but isn't sure if his body can take it. The schedule isn't doing him any favors this year with the Olympic break, so it will be a tough choice for him to make.

Less ice time would make more sense. 12th forward, powerplay specialist.

If true, it looks like he'll be fighting Etem for a job. At worst, it gives Etem some impetus to push even harder. At best, we get a driven Selanne. He's going to have to be better than last year, though.

He should be back and if he is outplaying the kids then he's 100% right in demanding a bigger role. It was obvious the shortened schedule took a huge toll on him and I think if he's back this year he will surprise many doubters as he's done before. And as much as it would completely kill me to see, if Anaheim isn't willing to give him that, he is right to explore other teams.

Can we PLEASE just get rid of Winnik and sign Selanne and Grabo...keep Holland and Rakell in the A one more year. They aren't ready for a full time role up here. This team needs to make its mind up: youth movement or contenders?

I like the idea of Selšnne competing with younger players because both would be motivated. I don't want to hand Selšnne a top 6 role just because he's Selšnne, he needs to play for it.

Penner-Getzlaf-Perry
Silfverberg-Bonino/Holland-Selšnne
Winnik-Koivu-Cogliano
Beleskey-Bonino/Holland-Palmieri
Maroon

Now that's great depth with Etem and Rakell covering for injuries.

Teemu is my all time favorite player but I think we have better options. Sure you can blame the schedule for his poor performance down the stretch last season but at the end of the day he's another year older and the schedule is no picnic this year with the Olympics taking up 2 weeks.

That being said if he wants to come back I'm not super against to it so long as we don't move anyone to fit him in. I just don't see where he fits. Etem or Silfverberg would have to go to the AHL to make room for him. Maybe he signs a PTO to compete for a spot training camp but I think Teemu would rather go somewhere else than do that.

Penner - Getzlaf - Perry
Silfverberg - Bonino - Palmieri
Winnik - Koivu - Cogliano
Beleskey - Holland/Rakell - Selanne/Etem

Yeah doubt it's feasible. And we're not trading Winnik for the sake of fitting in Teemu. No idea why anyone wants to trade our 2nd best PKing forward (behind Koivu) and a guy who played very heavy minutes for us last year. Taking Winnik off the 3rd line greatly downgrades its defensive ability.

Well, I'd bring back Selanne as long as it isn't for more than 2.5M/y anymore. And even then, we'd have to make a change if we are, indeed, pushing for Grabovski, who should immediately make this team that much better up front.

According to NHLnumbers.com, we now have 6.024M cap space. Say we sign Grabo to a 5by5 deal (5 years, 25M), there's only 1.024M left of that cap space. However, I wouldn't be completely adverse to trading Allen for a bag of pucks and instead dressing Hampus Lindholm as our #6 defenseman. According to various sites, he gew one inch taller and packed on 10 pounds of muscle; now standing at 6'3" and 194lbs.

So, say we deal Allen for a third-round pick (or maybe even a second round pick, who knows how desperate some GMs might be?). That's 3.5M off the books. Adding in Lindholm adds 1.744M, so the net gain would be 1.756M.

We'd then have 2.78M to sign Teemu, accordingly - which should be enough, actually.(1.024M + 1.756M = 2.78M)

That would look like one tough team to beat, then.

Penner - Getzlaf - Perry
Palmieri - Grabovski - Silfverberg
Cogliano - Koivu - Winnik
Beleskey - Bonino - Selanne*
Scratch: Holland/Maroon

Have Teemu change every now and then with either Penner, Palmieri or Winnik if one of them hits a wall. Add in some valuable PP time for time and we should be fine.

Fowler - Beauch
Sbisa - Souray
Vatanen - Lindholm
Scratch: Lovejoy/Clark

Hiller
Fasth

If you want to get rid of a 3rd winger, you might consider moving Cogliano. He had an excellent year so it could be considered selling high. But that assumes that he can't keep performing like that. Lots of reasons to believe either way (lockout-shortened year leads to strange performances vs he's still youngish).

I don't think it's a good idea to move a 3rd liner period, but just a thought if you're dead-set on freeing up the roster space from that slot.

I would want to move Penner since he's the piece that was signed to fill Selanne's roster spot. A little dicey to move a guy you just signed, however.

Teemu pointed that it would be wild to go to another team and haven't thinked about it that much.

It's kinda sad/odd to read that so many Ducks fans are willing to mark him off the team because of last season.

Though I agree that if he comes back he has to earn the top-6 position in this point. No free tickets for Teemu or the young prospects.

I believe closest thing to this he has said is "There are days going to practice when I think whether theres any sense in this" "But I know that I have to be able to play on a short notice if the deal is done" "Finding the motivation gets harder" 15.12.2012

I don't know how I feel anymore. I love Selanne, so that keeps me from wanting him to retire. However, his age did show through during last year which leads me to believe that he (along with the rest of us) had to question his ability to keep up. Now, I am not a pro athlete, but if 1-2 extra rest days between some games makes that big of a difference then I don't see why he can't play another year.

I don't think we can count on Selanne to create chances for his line at this stage in his career, but he sure knows where to go and can be lethal because of it. I just don't want him to carry the puck in the zone every shift. Come down the right side, put on the breaks at the top of the circle (or cut back at the bottom of the circle) and try to pass it through the slot. Predictable. That isn't his job and I'd rather watch him dump it around the boards for the inevitable young gun to rush in and try to regain possession. Meanwhile he finds his sweet spot.

No reason why he can't be a 20g-30a guy in an 82 game season. Those are respectable numbers if our young guns don't explode like everywhere is hoping.

Why would that be the end? Is that a retirees' rally?
