Well, they're 1-0 with the first shutout since 2012 since the trade!

Anyone could have, but most teams got 3 balls in that lottery.

The Panthers got ... one.

Bad example on your part.

I agree. If Tallon had passed on Mac, that's one thing. But Mac was never gonna be ours once we lost the lottery.

The more things change, the more they remain same....

It is now after the TDL, we have zero shot at the playoffs. The team has thrown the white flag. We are playing tons of AHLers to give them NHL experience. It looks like and feels like tank time has returned to South Florida.

Naturally, that means that the team is once again asking season ticket holders, in most cases, to pay dramatic increases in season ticket prices to renew their seats. And yes these are the same seats that STH cannot give away now...

So what is a STH to do? The answer is wait until August when their will be tons of great seats available, and then negotiate a reasonable deal.

Don't worry, Vancouver print media blows and no one worth their salt in Vancouver takes them seriously. Especially the author of this article. It's fairly par for the course in terms of outrageously stupid articles written. I wouldn't worry about it.

This.

Barkov - more Selke like potential
Mac - more goal scoring potential.

Here's the email I sent that province writer:

I just wanted to say congratulations, your article "Luongo edges Schneider as ex-canucks battle in hockey purgatory" has to be the most uninformed inaccurate article I've ever seen written. Goodness, I don't know what the bigger surprise is, that someone who doesn't know anything about the current situation of a team is allowed to write about it, or The Province for hiring you as a sports writer.

Best wishes from one of the many Florida Panther fans.

Gee... I wonder if... I dunno... having a winning hockey team more than once every 15 years or so would help?

Apparently it's only the fans that grasp this concept.

Return of the Tank

Is the team the Panthers? Check. Is the team out of playoff contention? Check. Is it after the TDL?Check? Is the team filled with AHLers "gaining valuable experience?" Check.

Who among you is still in tank denial? If so,why?

This team is full of AHLers because we have 4-5 regulars injured.

Don't worry it's just Botchford, half of Vancouver hates him too.

No and yes. The team added 2 AHLers due to the mid-season trade of Versteeg. The team then added more because we moved Goc, Weaver and Matthias at the TDL with the addition of Lou being a wash for the subtraction of Thomas. The team also essentially benched Jovo in order to make room for another AHL D-man. That equals 6. On top of that, due to recent injuries, the has added another 4 or so. All in all, slightly less than half of our current roster started the year in the AHL.

At the beginning and throughout the first half of the season, there was a large group of posters denying that the Panthers would follow the usual pattern of trading away vets at the TDL, calling up AHLers and then tanking.

Tanking = trying to lose

You don't acquire Pirri and Luongo if you are trying to lose.

If you define "tanking" as meaning "being a bad hockey team" then you could say the Panthers are tanking.

That is simply not what most people mean by that term.

What ATF said. Tanking means trying to lose. Nothing that I've seen tells me that Viola, Tallon, Horachek or any of our players are trying or wanting to lose games. The season is lost, everyone knows it, and we're in early pre-season/training camp mode.

I know you enjoy the idea of the Tank, but I can't join you. I like winning. I want our players to try to win games. WHere we pick in the draft is less important than evaluating the talent we have and seeing our young guys enjoy winning games.

Tell that to mid-2000s Pittsburgh.

I know it's a completely different concept (but possibly not next year). Still, when I've seen one year of playoff games in 14 years, I want to do whatever gets us closer. If that means losing meaningless games to get a more elite player, I'd rather that happen. That said, we've picked high and not seen results, and we've picked middle and gotten stuck in mediocrity too. It's a tough line.

Respectfully, you are mistaking words for deeds.

Actions always speak louder than words. In sports, no management ever admits intentionally to "tanking." Instead, management intentionally causes that result by trading away players that give the team a chance to win and replacing them with lesser players that give the team a better chance of losing. In the NHL, the proven formula is to play AHLers against NHLers. That is how it works. That is what the Panthers are doing.

Or... they got rid of players that were stopgaps anyways and now they're evaluating their future players. Hooray for perception!!

It's not math. You can't say that their actions mean any particular thing. It's all interpretive. Words are used to convey specific meanings.
