Geez what a character eh? Loved his comment about Gretzky, "no way would we have let him humiliate us like he does out there today. We'd have got him but good" (or words to that affect). Gretzky had he played back then actually wouldve been a larger player, and had he grown up & played in that era entirely possible cultivated a mean streak himself in dealing with the more rough & tumble nature of the game and its players, still wildly dominating the lot of them. Ive often heard it said by oldtimers that the game as played in the teens through 20's & 30's was a lot rougher-tougher & violent than it was during the late 60's through the 70's, the era in which Gretzky developed & it certainly didnt hold him back in any meaningful way. Pretty hard to hit a Ghost in any age.

Heres Aurel at 83, still on skates & lookin pretty spry, some old clips included: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVRa34pbUe4

The glimpses into Canadian society from the twenties thru WWII is interesting as are the comments portraying the expanding rosters and resulting impact on shift length, shift management etc.

The Gretzky comments should be viewed in this context. The leading centers from the Joliat's era were not violent or physical - Frank Boucher, Frank Nighbor, Howie Morenz, Joe Primeau and others but the limited rosters forced them to match-up against each other offensively and defensively while managing shifts accordingly.

By Gretzky's time the rosters were much larger so the top centers TOI was reduced. With match-ups games became fragmented. So it was possible to reduce a Pittsburgh vs Edmonton game to Gretzky vs the rest and Lemieux vs the rest with little Gretzky vs Lemieux time.

The other part that is really interesting is when Joliat talks about integrating a team or a line, adapting to Howie Morenz. Rarely seen today.
