With camp starting tomorrow, the holdouts that i think are most noteable are Pietrangelo and Stepan.

apparently Pietrangelo wants 7m aav (doughty $)...and the blues have minimum 7.6m available - but want him to sign for about 6m.

why even do that? i get the "rfa/leverage" bit obviously. but isn't there a point where you just pay out your best player long term and be happy you have him

...i'm also a bit surprised the rangers are so aggressive in hard balling stepan given how bad richards was this year.

as an aside, i'm glad we just pay people, avoid drama, and work out the cap. i'm sure stan could try to take players to the wall because of the "leverage" he has...but i'm glad they don't bother. imo, being nice in negotiations encourages the players to be nice back.

Yeah, I am also confused about the Petro situation. He's proven himself as a top pairing guy. If you want him, sign him long term now, before the cap goes up. If not, trade him. Signing him to a bridge contract of any kind is just going to cost a lot more later when the cap goes up. Not only that, after this, he might just be saying you know what, **** it, just get me to UFA, I don't care about the 7M; I'll get more than that from someone else later. Fine by me, that team is not even a threat without Petro.

Couldn't be happening to a better team, hope Petro screws them over and holds out all season.

Blues have $7.6 mil in cap space. If they give Pietrangelo what he wants, they probably have to make a trade.

Yes. You need to keep $1.5-ish for injury call ups. So if he wants more than $6MM they would have to trade someone.

They do now. I remember back in the 90's, in reference to Roenick's contract demands/requests - when Bill Wirtz publicly berated Jeremy Roenick, saying who does this young man think he is, Michael Jordan? He is no Michael Jordan. And before you know it, he was traded to Phoenix.

Not exactly sure why, but it appears as if there is some complication between Daniel Cleary and PHI. Told he will not be joining Flyers.

Someone else tweeted that Cleary has a better offer somewhere other than Philly. Who the hell is dumber than Holmgren?

Cleary was a no-show at the Flyers camp and is apparently headed back to the Red Wings

Helene St. James ‏@HeleneStJames 9m
And here we go: Per Daniel Cleary "Flying to Traverse. I'm back. Signing tonight." #RedWings

They'll only need a million and they'll have that after they sign another depth dman and Pietrangelo, even if he's getting 7 per. Capgeek doesn't have all the rosters correct.

CapGeek has them at $7.3MM in space. Please enlighten me and everyone else where the mistake is at on there?

Once Keith Aucoin is sent down to the AHL, we have $8.25m in cap space with 22 players signed.

There is a threshold. Forget what it is, but teams can still bury cheap contracts. Someone more in tune with the CBA could give you more details.

Guys with cap hits lower than $925K can be sent down with no penalty.

Any player can be buried, but anything over $925K is charged against the salary cap - so a team can bury a player with a salary cap hit of $3M, but $2.075M will be charged to their cap ($3M - $925K).

Capgeek has them down for 15 forwards counting against the cap and 6 dmen against the cap. At a minimum, you can tack on 600K onto the capspace they can work with without Pietrangelo signed.

Flyers fan coming in peace with a fantasy hockey question.
I have to drop either Dave Bolland or Michael Frolik in my fantasy league. Who should it be?

Is it an obvious answer? They had similar fantasy point totals last year and I'm not too familiar with either one, besides limited viewings in the playoffs.
