Hmm. He's 35. Got a concussion in the playoffs, and has had a couple of injuries in the past. Maybe he just decided to call it quits.

I heard about this possibility for the first time back in May, so I'm not that surprised, just sad. An unfortunate end to a good career if it turns out to be true. If this is it, thanks for everything Lyde.

If Ward is reporting that he is retiring, Lydman probably just signed a 3 year deal.

This sucks. Also sucks for him that he has silver/2nd place from: Stanley Cup Final, Olympics, World Championship, World Cup and Finnish Elite League. Basically he never won anything.

He should've been born a swede, I bet he'd have lucked out at least 2 or 3 of those things.

It's hypothetical, but if that stupid hit by Abdelkader never happened, Ducks would probably win that matchup. A quality defensive defenseman.

Wow, huge blow to the Finnish Olympic team if true. Their defense was already the weakest of the top-6 countries on paper. 38 year old Timonen and 39 year old Salo will need to carry a huge burden. Joni Pitkänen will be their only prime aged NHL defender. The Finnish national team really need all of Vatanen, Ristolainen, Mättä and Pokka to develop into quality defensemen come 2018...

Lots of players retire but stick around to play internationally.

Don't worry, even if the prospects develop, they'll be given no invite to the team. We'll be rolling with age 45 Timonen, Salo, Nummelin and some random guys from our league. I bet Ville Peltonen will also be there. Crap country.

Abdelkader should be ashamed if that dirty hit has anything to do with why Lydman is hanging them up...as his former teammate, I hope George Parros settles up with Abdelkader the first time the Habs & Wings meet; he deserves to be taught a lesson...

Ridiculous. Clean hit, wrong call. Abs doesn't target the head, it wasn't from behind, Lydman left himself open for the hit trying to make a play. Best of luck to Lydman in the future.

Can't really recall where I read it but the link was definitely around here somewhere, probably the Ducks board. It mentioned Lydman was waiting to see if Ducks could make room for him and if not, he might retire. Don't know how legit it is, but if true it does make sense he turned down two offers but even if he doesn't end up in Anaheim it could still be possible he's just playing the waiting game right now but end up signing with another team in the end.

...speaking of Ridiculous...anyone who even has remote knowledge of hockey trying to justify that hit is either a blind Homer for the Wings or has taken one too many bumps to the noggin' themselves...THAT is the kind of hit that needs to be removed from hockey...

Too bad Lydman has to retire.

That hit and the resulting 2-gamer pretty much wraps up the NHL's effectiveness at curbing or deterring career-threatening concussions.

Damn. I wish we never signed Allen. Lydman is such a better option to play with Sbisa or Vatanen.

You can't be serious. We lost on untimely goals because our defenders weren't clearing the crease. Not Lydman's MO.
