NHL Pre-Game Rituals

I've always wondered this. I don't know if you guys have seen this but sometimes they'll show players in warmups or something on TV and it looks to me like a piece of gum still in the wrapper and it looks like they're "smelling" it? Could someone tell me what they're doing and why they do this? Is it superstition? I honestly don't know, thanks!
