Calgary - Toronto

With Toronto needing to sign both Kadri and Franson and only having 4.8M free to do that could a deal be worked out between the 2 clubs for Fransen? Obviously if it comes down to fransen vs Kadri, Kadri wins hands down especially with the abundance of D Toronto already has. But Kadri Is rumored to be looking for 3.5-4m. Say he ends up with 3M on a 1-2 year contract that leaves Toronto with 1.8M free.

To Calgary: Cody Franson

To Toronto:
Chris Butler (1/2 Salary retained) $1.7M = $850,000 1 yr
Roman Horak - $805,000 - 1yr (RFA)
2014 3rd

I like Butler on the 3rd pair, but we have Fraser - Ranger for that with Brennan as the 7th already. So no need for him.

I like Horak I think he can be a good 2nd/3rd line two-way C. But at 22 he's going to start need getting minutes before we can give it to him. He's pretty much a future Bozak imo.

So not a terrible proposal but I don't like it, and I think every leafs fan will say no and every avs fan say yes.

Ah...no....no it doesn't. It comes down to sending Holzer/Brennan down thus raising the space to 6mil. It then comes down to moving Liles (via trade while retaining salary or buyout) which gives another 2-3 mil. Then we will sign both Kadri and Franson.

No. Just take Liles for anything you want that doesn't have any salary.

Counter

Liles + Blacker
Nemisz + Ferland

as proposed in the last Calgary - Toronto trade thread

(Note* anything with Glencross leaving Calgary won't work for reasons stated in every Glencross thread)

I would do that deal.

I just can't see us moving Franson for anything less than a 1st+decent prospect or a top prospect alone

How is Franson worth so much in a trade but only $3.5m on a one-year contract?

Given what Leaf fans are asking for in a trade, they should be lining up to pay him $5m for the long term.

He's weirdly overrated. He's been a bottom pairing dman his entire career, although he is good at putting up points in the role of bottom pairing PP specialist. At almost 26, it's not likely he makes any huge strides in development. Maybe a #4 guy, if the Leafs are lucky?

He has made strides in the last 2 years and showed that he can step up his game in the playoffs so I really don't mind Leafs fans putting his value past the bottom pairing defenseman that he currently is.
That said I don't really want Calgary to pay the price it would take to grab him unless contract talks really go south.

I don't really like the deal for the Flames.

Franson isn't anything special and the Flames aren't trying to win now. I'd rather keep Horak.

I'm not the biggest Butler fan, but defensively I think he's better than Franson. It's not an awful proposal, but I don't see the point for the Flames.

Horak is developing nicely as a good young 2 way center who can chip in offensively but has offensive inconsistancies.

When we first got him for Erixon we had no clue about him, but he's impressed and improved ever since.

In time he's a guy that you can build a strong bottom 6 line around.

John-Michael Liles, Jesse Blacker and the Leafs' 4th round draft pick of 2014 to the Calgary Flames for Greg Nemisz.
