OT: NASCAR back to NBC, ESPN/Turner out - (UPDATE: 13 Races on NBCSN)

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/S...BC-rights.aspx

Quote:
ESPN and Turner Sports will be out of the NASCAR business after next season, according to several sources. NASCAR is planning a press conference later today to announce that Fox and NBC will share rights to the sport starting in 2014. Financial terms of NBC’s deal and its broadcast plans aren’t known, but the network had been pitching NASCAR on returning the Sprint Cup series to broadcast TV and could air races on Sunday afternoons on NBC prior to "Sunday Night Football." NBC also picked up rights to the second half of the Nationwide Series. It’s unclear if those races will be on NBC or NBC Sports Network.
So more programming for NBCSN potentially.

Hate NASCAR but I am so happy that ESPN loses another huge contract. I will probably turn a race on and take naps to them and increase ratings.

People watch NASCAR any other way? Honestly I kind of like my Sunday NAPCAR races when the NFL is out of season or I have my late game blocked. Its more soothing to nap to than baseball and a more exciting finish.

This would be more exciting if NASCAR hadn't flamed out on ESPN

I am no fan of NASCAR, but I hope it sees a gigantic revival on NBC and becomes the #5 sport.

ESPN can suck it

NBCSN is growing for sure. They just need to land MLB or NFL package now.

Move SNF to NBCSN? Yea I know NFL would go berzerk.

I'm all for having NASCAR on NBC, as I almost never watch that channel compared to ESPN, so it'll be all the more easy for me to ignore something that I don't care about.

It being on NBCSN though, which I do watch a fair amount during the hockey season, might be an issue, though.

But hey, my own selfish opinions aside, it's a good landing for NBC. That'll help their bottom line.

Their contract would not allow that, it is an over the air TV deal. It's also NBC's highest rated program, they and their affiliates wouldn't give up that ad revenue.

I would also think that before the NFL would allow that, the NFL itself would just look at putting that game on the NFL network

Nah. More than 1 game a week on it is counterproductive to them. They needed 1 game to convince TV providers to carry it. A 2nd game does very little, they'll make way more money off the fee from NBC or whoever than they would selling air time for them themselves.

Wow, this is pretty big news for ABC/ESPN to be dropping Nascar. I wonder if this came down to re-negotiations and Nascar gave a number that made ESPN say "Um, no thanks".

That's a big sports entity you're giving to the competition in NBC though-it may not be as high as it was 10 years ago, but it's still a decent audience you're giving up.

ESPN is in for a rough couple years here. I am curious to see what they come back swinging on. But the biggest announcement is coming shortly. The B1G is going to leave them for Fox, Fox Sports 1 and the B1G Network cleaning up the rest of the games and seasons. That is the most massive blow they are going to receive this decade and it's coming.

They should have more money to throw around but content is quickly working away from them. My guess is they will sink even deeper into their current direction of programming and sports that have driven me away in the first place. If Fox Sports 1 comes up with a decent Sports Center esk program, I will have no reason to turn on ESPN anymore, that is the one area NBC has made little progress on in terms of they do it but I want more quality in the highlight department.

By the sounds of it, NBC offered over the air coverage and that was the turning point. ESPN was only interested in having races there, not on ABC.

NBC Sports ‏@NBCSports 59s
Seven (7) NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events will be carried on NBC annually, with balance (13) airing on NBC Sports Network (@NBCSN).

Instantly NBCSN's #2 property.

Deal is 10 years, 20 sprint cup races and 19 nationwide races. It is for the second half of the NASCAR season.

So NBCSN is presumably going to be a big part of this.

yep... in Bill Carter's book on the Conan O'Brien fiasco there's some talk about how NBC runs SNF at a substantial loss in the hope that the free publicity will pay off down the line with other programming (so far, it hasn't worked).

Thought that was the season they enter the new deal, either way this decade they are getting hit with that bomb shell. Call the Conference overrated, take whatever shots you want but the B1G is still king in terms of money, advertising, and ratings. That is not content they want to lose and they have no real way of making that up. That is ten times worse than Hockey or Nascar winding up on competitors.

I think the Premier League will eventually pass Nascar in popularity on this deal. We will see, but if they can start giving us more games and coverage of that, I think they can do big things with that, but a lot of that has to do with restrictions on what they are allowed stateside by the EPL and their UK tv partners if I remember right.

I think the Big Ten can begin negotiating in 2015.

I believe now the next bug item will be the NBA. That looks like it will be an expensive fight between Fox and ESPN. After that is the Big Ten and then all the big properties are locked up through the 2020's.

Does NFL let teams' local market channels carry a NFL Network game or is it just a NY thing? For example if Jets game is on NFL network either CW or My9 carry the game here.

Yes, it's a league rule that a local station has to carry any cable game.

MNF games are never on local stations, or is it? Cant remember if Giants or Jets game on MNF was aired on local station.

NBC should switch over WWE from USA to NBCSN (I know it's funny to think about) and then move N'wide and feeder series to Monday nights and have them race before Raw.

Genius idea...

WWE on wheels and WWE...
